Hello Mukul, here is an excellent source that provides insight on this technology, with graphics.

Hi, Thanks for the replies,

but actually it gone over the head...
Is this another version of SMR? how it is different from SMR or CMR?

I ask this because I have 2 WD 2TB hdds, one with CMR and other with SMR. The performance diff is quite noticeable with moderate work load (IMHO) . The SMR one is very fast relative small transfer (upto 500-700mb) maybe due to high cache. But after that it slows down drastically.

I bought the SMR hdd (newer one) before I came to know the CMR-SMR saga....

  • 1 year later...

1) It's "Seagate" ... not "seaget"

2) High-level and concise explanation: https://blag.nullteilerfrei.de/2018/05/31/pmr-smr-cmr-i-just-want-a-hdd-mr/

Edit:

btw, "TGMR" should be considered to be a form of SMR, and generally avoided if you're interested in NAS/SAN (or similar) applications.

I have been unable to discover any explicit information online that TGMR = SMR. However, indirectly it is possible to make this association by virtue of studying Seagate's product manuals and comparing them to their declaration of which drives have CMR versus SMR design, found here: https://www.seagate.com/internal-hard-drives/cmr-smr-list/

Why Seagate specifically? Because they're the only manufacturer using the term "TGMR" at the moment. Unfortunately, the hard drive manufacturers seem to have their own nomenclature for what often amounts to essentially the same technology (from a layman's perspective). I suspect this is due to intellectual property rights rather than marketing.

It's very confusing either way. For example... the technical description of Seagate's TGMR sounds very similar to MAMR (Seagate) and EAMR (Western Digital), yet both MAMR and EAMR are forms of CMR, while as mentioned above, TGMR is a type of SMR.

A sort of cheat sheet if you want CMR... these are OK (and anything not on this list should be suspect or avoided):

CMR

EAMR
ePMR

HAMR

MAMR
PMR
PTMR
TMR
