Upgrading Memory to do some light video editing

Relevant System Specs:

Intel Core i5 8th Gen 2.8 GHz Processor

Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB video card

16 GB (2x8GB) 2666 DDR4 Ram

It is getting to be about that time to do some upgrading...

I'm a teacher and I'd like to do some light to moderate video editing in the Windows ecosystem (our work-issued MacBook Airs have iMovie and...not great hardware).

I'm thinking the first thing I could upgrade would be the ram.  Also, I'm looking for recommendations for free video editing software on Windows.  Any thoughts?

Thanks!

16 gigs for the most part is more than enough for this workload, and honestly this build is more than enough for this workload, though depends on the scale of the project and if it's struggling..

Your ram is fine for video editing. More isn't really needed.

That's good to hear.  On to software, I guess.

I use hitfilm express and it’s quite good just kinda long render times.

I will recommend an NHu12s (or an NHd15 (maybe)) for your PC build. Quote or @ me @Prodigy_Smit for me to see your replies.

Ok so I've run into an issue now - I can do projects on Davinci Resolve just fine.  However, I've discovered that variable framerates are a thing (I told you I was a video n00b, right?)  I've also discovered I have some $ available to buy a dedicated camera.  Bonus points if it is platform agnostic (I'd really like it to play nice with MacOS in particular even moreso than Windows).

The biggest thing is I'd like a 1080p or better camera that I can use on either Mac or Windows that won't cause issues with variable frame rate.  I'd say my budget is around $500.

Thank you!
