Looking for an ultrawide monitor

Discjunkies

I am looking to purchase an ultrawide 34” monitor, my budget is 1600 CAD. I am not sure of which panel type to go with, IPS or VA. 100-144 hz is sufficient for me and only want HDR if it’s hdr1000. I will be using the monitor for Music production with daw’s, gaming, movies and maybe some creative content like photoshop or premiere pro. I was originally set on getting an IPS panel monitor and ended up ordering the ASUS Proart PA34VC, but due to complications never received the product and is now unavailable online. I also am not sure how the IPS bleed will be as I will be using my pc in a dark room at most times with a lot of darks on my screen. VA may be a better choice for me but it’s been hard to find a straight answer.

Any help is appreciated

IPS bleed is only really noticeable when it's a pitch black screen and you're looking for it. I have an IPS monitor, and I've never noticed any issues through regular use. It's a very overblown "issue."

Not sure where you live in Canada, but you can get the Acer for $50 less by ordering it from the US

This is what I'd get if you're fine with flat:

https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/mDH8TW/acer-xv340ck-pbmiipphzx-340-3440x1440-144-hz-monitor-xv340ck-pbmiipphzx

This is what I'd get if you want curved:

https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/fGH8TW/lg-34wn80c-b-340-3440x1440-60-hz-monitor-34wn80c-b

If you're fine with VA, I'd go with this:

Thanks, I was skeptical at first because of some IPS bleeding Comparison videos shown on YouTube but I know it varies between each monitor and the camera picks it up a lot more than in person. Appreciate the suggestions, I actually am looking for a curved monitor, I noticed the one you mentioned has a 60hz refresh rate and I was hoping to find one that’s 100hz+. I’m also curious as to what ips monitor you own even if it isn’t ultrawide(for spec comparison)

Ahhh I missed the high refresh bit.

So, if you want to go a bit higher in price, I'd go for one of these:

https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/product/CzrmP6/lg-34gk950f-b-340-3440x1440-144-hz-monitor-34gk950f-b

I took a look at the Dell site, since the Alienware monitors weren't coming up in PCPartPicker, and this one is on sale $500 off:

https://www.dell.com/en-ca/shop/alienware-34-curved-gaming-monitor-aw3420dw/apd/210-atzq/monitors-monitor-accessories

It would be the first one I strongly consider. It's by far the best deal, as it has NanoIPS, GSync, and a high refresh rate.

I own a 29" LG ultrawide. Once you go IPS it's really hard to go back to TN, and I haven't tried VA yet but it's likely going to be my next monitor (more out of necessity than preference).

Thanks for the help, I’m going to go with the Alienware aw3420dw, had my eye on that before but saw some reviews mentioning bad IPS glow, but I checked out an IPS monitor at London drugs today beside a bunch of TN panels, and the TN looked ancient in terms of picture quality, so I think I will be happy with any good IPS panel. I also plan on installing a backlight to reduce eye stress and have heard that it can reduce IPS glow if needed.

The Lg looked good as well but the Alienware had 80% of reviews rated at 5 stars compared to 60% for the lg display (on amazon reviews).

Do you think the IPS monitor I ordered originally (Asus Proart PA34VC) was worth the 1500$ tag in comparison to the Aw3420dw. Curious as to if I would have regretted my purchase with that monitor.

If you're going by Amazon reviews, ignore them. Amazon reviews are 90% trash. It's always better to look up actual reviews from a site like RTings.

Honestly they're probably pretty similar. The Asus probably has slightly more accurate colors due to it being a Proart monitor and they calibrate them, but you can probably do the same with the Alienware and a calibrator provided the adjustment options are there. The Alienware has GSync, better pixel response, and a higher refresh rate for a lower price; seems like a better buy IMO. Especially since it's usually $1,900.

I can’t make up my mind between the AW3420DW and the 34GK950F, https://www.displayspecifications.com/en/comparison/a4e8d069e .

The LG monitor has 10 bit colour(8 bit + frc), 400cd brightness compared to 350 in the Alienware, not sure about what’s better here: the LG is AH-IPS with KSF LED and Alienware is just IPS With W-LED. Alienware seems to have better build quality and a lower response time also + a better warranty.

They're really close. I doubt you'd notice a difference between the two, but if you have an Nvidia card I'd lean more towards the Dell.

Just pulled the trigger on a LG 34GN950-B. I hope I don’t have any issues with it, it’ll be a huge upgrade from using a 2011 40 inch 1080p Samsung tv as my monitor for years.

oh So I have this monitor and it's super nice. Dont think you'll be disappointed with it ! Only things to watch out for is IPS glow, on my panel there's some at the bottom corners. And check for dead pixels, luckily i don't have single one. And DO NOT touch the peeling corners..

Gsync works as it should, it's actually enabled out of the box. check out this video to get the most out of it

Looking at its review by hardware unboxed On YouTube it sounded like an improvement overall(they mention less IPS glow and a better stand) Rtings Review on it was decent too. Also the monitor I went with is much newer which I figure would give me more of a chance of getting a good monitor/exchanging if needed, as there is only one in stock of the older lg.

I hope the IPS glow isn’t that noticeable, worst case scenario I can return it and I might just try a VA next. Have you tried watching YouTube videos and movies on it, how are the blacks when viewing.

Have you seen “ghosting” in VA monitors? I see many people argue that it’s worse than IPS glow and vice versa, but not sure what’s worse and if ghosting still occurs in newer VA monitors

it was an ultrawide VA i tried and yes it had a lot of ghosting. tbh it depends if your sensitive to it, i found that i was and couldn't deal with it. the LG is very fast, super smooth and crisp. and this is across the refresh range, some panels don't even have good response time as you go lower the refresh rate. but i heard more recent VA panels handle ghosting a lot better
