Brown and black stains on PSU connectors? What is this? Should I even plug this in?

Ivan587

Hello, today I bought a brand new Corsair RM850i power supply. But I noticed this brown and black stains, on the connectors. I attached 2 images that show it. Can someone tell me what is that and is it safe to plug this into my PC?

Thank you.

Looks like a used item. Was the packaging properly sealed? I'd return it.

It was, some people on reddit just now said it is dielectric grease, it does come off though. I'm not 100% sure what to do.

How does the actual metal of the connector look?  If you are confident it is brand new and you bought it from somewhere you trust, I would wipe it off an use it.

It must be true, I read it on the internet...

I've decided to return it. Better safe then sorry. Thank you everyone for responding.

So, believe it or not, they actually test every single PSU with its cable set before it leaves the factory.

I KNOW, RIGHT?!?!?
The black is magic marker showing that the cables were tested. The brown, if it comes off, is just something that came off the test fixture.

I mean... if you prefer, they could NOT test every PSU, but then DOA rate might be higher.  😉
