i7 5820k vs 6950x for music production

Hey guys,

I have a desktop pc system that I bought about 5 years ago with i7-5820k and I'm thinking about upgrading my cpu. My motherboard is pretty old too: MSI X99 SLI PLUS, and I tried to check on their website what's the newest cpu this motherboard supports, in this link:

https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/support/X99s-SLI-PLUS.html#support-cpu

But what's strange is that it doesn't even list my current 5820k cpu for some reason. I would like to ask if:

1. Can I trust that list saying that i7-6950x is the latest supported cpu?

2. Would you recommend to upgrade from 5820k to 6950x? Is it worth it? If not, should I consider getting a new motherboard with the i7-8700k cpu?

I'm using my system for music production and my concern is being able to load many cpu hungry vsts

Thanks a lot in advance! And sorry if I'm missing anything

You shouldn't even be considering Intel at all, let alone overpriced X99 CPUs from 5 years ago.

Get a Ryzen 7 3700X and a B550 board. It'll be faster than the 6950X and 8700K and also cheaper. Not to mention it'll run much cooler and use less power.

im not familiar with music production and how demanding it is, but this is certainly an upgrade.

no, dead platform and the 8700k would not really be an upgrade in some cases, keep your current board or wait for zen 3 and check what it has to offer and decide if you want to move to a different platform.

Thanks a lot for your answers guys,

5x5 - if it's not worth it to upgrade to 8700k, do you think there will be a considerable performance gain in upgrading to Ryzen 7 3700X ?

Thanks again

For music production, it depends a lot on the software you're using.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Thanks Fasauceome ok 🙂

I'm using Ableton Live 10 and my concern is being able to load multiple instances of cpu hungry vsts (such as Diva)

What do you think?

^^^ Broadwell-E is noticeably faster on single core than Haswell-E when comparing clock for clock (I've gone from a 5820K to a 5960X and now a 6950X). It's not an insane difference though, especially since the Haswells will usually clock higher and come out equal. 6950X would be useful if your software can use a ton of cores, buuuut I still can't say it's actually worth it. I got an insane deal on mine and it was still $500, they're usually $750-1000+, far too expensive to be worth it on a price/performance basis.

If you don't need great single core, there are Xeon options that are usually cheaper, but higher core count variants will still be quite expensive for their age (Don't trust ES versions, they don't work on most mobos. Need a QS or full release chip, and those are the expensive ones).

yea, x99 does support sky lake X

It doesn't support Sky Lake-X. Sky Lake-X was used on the LGA 2066 socket. X99 chipset was used on the LGA 2011-3 socket.

For that, I do think the improvement to an 8 core Ryzen CPU is worth it. However the 4th gen CPUs might be launching really soon so might want to wait.
