Tuf armour

I just went digging thru out school's PC club's parts storage.

I found a butt load of old boards and other stuff, but 1 in particular asus

interests me. Z97 Sabertooth, it's got plating and pcie covers, usb covers and I checked youtube it says it helps cool the mb. Why did asus stop implementing the plating armours? 

It looks so epic and has functionality too. 

Asus if you're watching LTT forums please make a armour for your tuf boards. 

And make a itx TUF board too? please with extra strawberries on top.

If you are reffering to the fullcover front plate, thats present on their high end boards......

 

Doesnt really do a lot tho, really only there for aesthetic purposes

1. It doesnt help with cooling, apart from VRM and PCH nothing on the board needs it. It does make the board look better and easier to grab (compared to avoid gripping on soldered components otherwise), that's it.

 

2. TUF Gaming is not TUF. It's a mid range product. TUF was high end that focuses on warranty length rather than performance (which you get ROG).

Depends on the board, more often those extra covers do nothing honestly. I had a their Z170 Sabertooth Mark 1, and while I loved it, I'm not to sure that it was a good seller as it was pretty expensive within the Z170 product stack. I did appreciate that on this board the TUF armor had air channels with 2 small fans to cool the VRM and the chipset I believe.

However, the lower end TUF boards really just follow the name because of how they are styled and for the marketing gimmick, having multiple ITX boards is unnecessary, plus there is barely any room to add anything to the already very compact form factor, the ROG Strix boards are perfectly fine IMO.

 

The Sabertooth Mark 1 was much higher end than anything that has since followed, although the latest X570 TUF boards were better in terms of overall VRM cooling/performance, but Asus stopped making TUF boards as a top end board and have since fit them into their mid-range boards. I think now it usually goes Prime  TUF  ROG Strix  Crosshair (AMD) / Maximus (Intel).

Similar on HEDT as well, except the top end is Zenith/Rampage for AMD/Intel. Old TUF Sabertooth boards were similarly amazing, new ones have been much more meh.

Oh, will asus implement "TUF" Series on AMD ever? I would love to have an "TUF" motherboard for my Silent Cerberus build. I'd love to see a full grey motherboard with that kind of toughness quality in an itx. .

Yeah I guess after Crosshair/Maximus comes Zenith/Rampage lol, also they have the new Creator series of boards which I think overall is on par with the ROG Strix boards? How knows.

But yeah I loved my old Sabertooth Mark 1, it had an insane amount of internal connectors. They just don't make them like they used to, moved further down the product stack.

Yes they have done so since 1st gen Ryzen launched, but the TUF series is now mid-range, not high end.

I ment something like the sabertooth or gryphon but in itx or dtx since they did do a new dtx in X570.

I think the styling never caught on, now they do large cover plates with the Crosshair/Maximus and Zenith/Rampage boards and implement more RGB. The Sabertooth Mark 1 was the last high end TUF board they made, maybe we will see a one off in the future. 

 

There is nothing to really add to an ITX board there is barely any exposed PCB as is, and if you want they have additional cover plates that you can 3D print, they have had that option for a long time.

Well its higher end than the prime sereis lol, also they have two TUF boards for every chipset, the X570 TUF boards are pretty good., the new B550 boards look decent as well.

I just watched Linus's old announcement vid of the Z97 tuf boards. 

*cringe * I thought he's slim now... But damn he's sooo skinny then. 

Was NCIX paying the poor guy? He had chopsticks for arms, he looked like he had mel-nutrition. 

Thank God he looks so much better now.

Not the old TUF, they effectively killed it off and used its name for something... worse. You can call the current TUF a zombie of its old self

Does it really matter what label they stick on the board? Asus still makes very good mainboards, who cares what they call them? I certainly don't. All those names, ROG, TUF, Prime... nothing more than marketing gibberish. What counts are the features and the performance, not the name.

Yeah but what I want is something neutral looking build like a tank and TUF used to be it. 

Now it's components are like a ghost of it's former self.

Now that was a board hard to colour coordinate back then, "orange" no rgb back then, no LTT, limited edition noctua LTT fans, no cable mods custom Pro cables. Too bad didn't have green boards or we'd have all three companies represented red/AMD, Blue/Intel, Green/Nvidia. lol.
