Can I take an existing item on the market and copy it to roughly the same dimensions and then sell it? Or does this infringe on some copy right if they have a patent on it? If so how much do you have to change the item as to not infringe on it? Thanks

I think that would probably depend on what the copyright/patent is, and what kind of shenanigans you pull to get around it. I don't necessarily recommend reverse engineering to circumvent copyrights and patents, but you would probably want to speak with a legal professional rather than ask here.

Just to add: Copyright and patents are not the same. You can infringe on copyright even if the other party doesn't have patents. And you can be in violation of someone's patent even if the item you sell is not a "copy". (I am not a lawyer etc. you should definitely speak to one beforehand)

I can give a general overview of IPR, but if you have commercial intends you should contact an attorney specializing in IPR.

 

A patent and a copyright isn't the same thing. A patent protects industrial inventions, while a copyright protects creative works. 

It's therefor important to find out exactly what you're trying to copy. 

 

The general rule is that copying is forbidden. As is changing a protected item, as this would be seen as derivative. This goes for both patents and copyright.
