So I'm looking to get a stream of and I can't afford brand new PC but I prefer 6 cores so I looked at the i7 8700 which is besiclly this same as the i7 still are now. But I can't seem to find one that is low enough price for it to make sense. Do PC parts have some kind of weird value curve? I never looked in to used parts so please help thx.

Intel CPUs tend to hold better value than AMD, at least it's been this way in the past few years.

Considering you can get a new Ryzen 3600 and solid B450/B550 board for the same price that you could get a used i7-8700(K) and Z370/Z390 board, I'd say the choice is pretty clear-cut.

Desktop: Intel Core i9-9900K | ASUS Strix Z390-F | G.Skill Trident Z Neo 2x16GB 3200MHz CL14 | EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER XC Ultra | Corsair RM650x | Fractal Design Define R6

Laptop: 2018 Apple MacBook Pro 13"  --  i5-8259U | 8GB LPDDR3 | 512GB NVMe

Peripherals: Leopold FC660C w/ Topre Silent 45g | Logitech MX Master 3 & Razer Basilisk X HyperSpeed | HIFIMAN HE400se & iFi ZEN DAC | Audio-Technica AT2020USB+

Display: Gigabyte G34WQC

And i7 does not tell the whole story

There are many different things that make up a cpu like the cache layout

The ipc count, the fpu etc.

Intel cpu's don't often go down in value a whole lot.

Consider ryzen for a cheaper platform with higher core count.

What's your budget exactly?

By budget is sub 1k hopefully 600-800 but 900 is fine too

Go for a 3600 build with something like a b450 pro 4 or a tomahawk or a mortar or a vdh max.

And some 3600 cl16 ripjaws and that'll ba a lot cheaper than getting a dead platform.

CPUs definitely depreciate. Bear in mind that 10th gen Intel *just* released. Eventually, that will put some pressure on the 8th and 9th gen chip prices, but the 8th gen just isn't that "old" yet, at least in terms of better offerings from Intel.

I've seen Intel hold this practice for a long time now. Going to any retailer you'll find CPUs that are multiple generations old that cost almost as much as when they were first released. Intel isn't a great choice if you're trying to get a bargain unless you're willing to buy used on eBay.

AMD on the other hand, at least from what I've seen in the past. Their CPUs become much cheaper faster with new releases and in general have a much lower upfront cost for chips that quite frankly will get it done for most people.

Unless you're after the best of the best AMD can save you money if you're willing to sacrifice some performance in certain tasks like gaming.

Specifically the top end intel chips like the i7 tend to hold the most value. People who have that platform and want to upgrade will pay the premium to get the best chip available for it, in order to not have to replace the whole thing. Unfortunately as you've found, this generally means they are poor value.

Its also driven becuase generally Intel dont discount old lines. So you dont generally find retaillers shifting the older chips at reduced prices, which would push the used market down.

Dont go with intel

Unless you want better overclocking capabilities, go with amd.

They are a lot cheaper and will give you a better value for your money.

Intel cpus just hold their value for years.

In my country the i7 6700k which is almost 5 years old is around the price of the 3700x.

Just go for a 3600 with a good b450/b550motherboard
