Wait for the 880's/ 880ti's or get dual Titan Blacks now?

Izaya Orihara

Get two 880ti's. 880 will I think be 4gb. 880Ti should be like 6gb. Or if you cant wait, dual blacks

Two Titan Blacks because chances are that Nvidia will have 4 gigs or at most 5 on their newer gpus.

I would go with the Blacks if you want to spend some money :P

The release date is unknown, (we can guestimate, that's all)

And the Titan Blacks will have more Vram (my guess, again)

For 4k, you really want all you can get.

4gb is fine, 6gb is even better.

GTX 790?
but yeah pretty safe to assume 880 will be 4GB, I honesty would be shocked it was lower.

CORSAIR RIPPER: AMD 3970X - 3080TI & 2080TI - 64GB Ram - 2.5TB NVME SSD's - 35" G-Sync 120hz 1440P
MFB (Mining/Folding/Boinc): AMD 1600 - 3080 & 1080Ti - 16GB Ram - 240GB SSD
Dell OPTIPLEX:  Intel i5 6500 - 8GB Ram - 256GB SSD

GTX 790 sli... quad sli, I'm looking for that myself.

On topic I myself will be on that dilemma in summer(at least I have more time to decide)... between 2 black titans or quad sli gtx790(if they ever release it) or whatever high end nvidia throws.

Why two Titan Blacks? Why not two 780Ti's? It's cheaper and more powerful.

I just think the titans are just uneconomical and has a terrible price/performance ratio if you just need them for gaming.

We don't really know what Maxwell on 20nm is really going to bring us. It could be twice as fast at the same price point, more likely it will be ~50% but it might not scale performance wise at all. Its mostly likely going to be better and its almost certainly going to arrive this year. The earliest time it could arrive is June/July based on the silicon production times but it could be a lot later than that if there are problems or they didn't buy early wafer starts. That is about all the information we really have other than the massive reduced power consumption at a given performance level, which might very well translate into performance but we just don't know.

To determine your GPU buying strategy you need to understand how the industry works. Its on a 2-3 year long cycle where initially new process technology is released and we get new cards with substantial gains on it. Then they do a refresh on the same process technology that is typically about 20% quicker but in this round was a lot more expensive (780, 290) and then the cycle starts again with another process change which historically has brought 2x performance.

You are looking at buying high end refreshed products near the end of that cycle, right before a new process technology and new architecture is released. Personally I would tell you to wait, but then it really depends on your current hardware as to whether you can. But the Titan blacks are terrible value for money, and the last halo product of a refresh that was ludicrously expensive.

not if you need more RAM, then you have no choice.

They're cheaper and powerful(780 Ti), but not more powerful than Black Titans, both have the same unlocked gpu, but the Black Titan has double the vram and precision.  I think you confused the original Titan with the new one.

I would wait. My guess is the 880 will be more powerful and less expensive.

You might end up waiting longer than you'd like or the performance of the 800 series might not be that much better than that of 700s... While you know what you can get now and whether it will enough for you or not (now). I'd think stuff like Titan Blacks will remain pretty impressive cards for some time to come.

If you need the 6GB VRAM then its a no-brainer, go with the Titan Blacks.  If you aren't going to be running 3 1440p monitors in surround then you don't need that much VRAM and should just go with a pair of 780Ti's in my opinion.  Don't even worry about the Maxwell replacement for the 780Ti/Titan as you won't be seeing that until the end of the year at the earliest and even then we'll likely be looking at another 680 situation where Nvidia will release a small-die GM104 as its flagship and save the large die for the next gen (like they did with Gk104 and then GK110).
