Advice regarding upgrading GPU for old PC

Go to solution Solved by iBabySlapper,

Yeah, RX 570s and 580s can be had for pretty cheap online. Or something slightly older than that like a GTX950. Anyhow, go used. The GT710 isn't worth 40 of your dollars.

Hello
I have an pretty old PC (from 2010) which has the following components:

CPU Intel Core u7 860

MB Intel DP55WG

GPU Nvidia GeForce 9400 GT !G DD2

I am about to move my PC to my young kid. He is not a gamer, but I want him to have a PC which will be able to play games from last years with reasonable resolution.

I have found the following GPU: https://www.newegg.com/global/il-en/asus-geforce-gt-710-gt710-sl-1gd5-brk/p/N82E16814126221

I would like to know

  1. Will the new GPU will work with my MB & CPU?
  2. Will I actually gain any gaming performance by replacing my old  GPU with this new one?

it's definitely better, but still won't allow you to play any sort of modern-ish games.

i would look at a radeon rx560 as a minimum.

That gt 710 will not play any game what so ever. It's a display adapter card to display office and a web browser but will not play games even something like terraria chugs on it.

Got a budget? Also what is the psu in this machine?

Better off with a new 'board...

That one only supports Gen.2 PCI-e.

I frequently edit any posts you may quote; please check for anything I 'may' have added.

Did you test boot it, before you built in into the case?

WHY NOT...?!

Please don't get a GT710, it's actually dogshit.

You should instead get on Craigslist or whatever and shop for a used low powered card like a GTX1050/TI or even RX560/570 as suggested above.

That'll set you back 80-100 USD but at least you don't feel like you wasted your money.

That one only supports Gen.2 PCI-e.

It's a cheap starting computer doesn't matter that it has pcie 2.0 still plenty for any budget gpu.

New board = new CPU = new memory

PCIe 2.0 is perfectly fine for low powered GPUs. He just wants a PC for his kiddo.
