I think they all have to show their singing abilities during their trainee days, way before they ever get selected to be part of whatever music group the company is forming at that time. JYP's did a show not, to long ago called The Nizi Project that was filmed in Japan. After hundreds if not thousands of people auditioned, where many probably never passed the audition stage or let alone reached the 1st round of eliminations, at the end, 9 of them got selected, to be part of the new group called NiziU, where they're like the Japanese version of Twice. They released a pre-debut M/V a few days ago. Official debut is sometime later this fall, in November.

my little cousin who lives in japan was dancing to what is love and a commercial for nizi project came on and she pointed at the tv and said "Like Her, Like Her!" it was so adorable

It was talent survival show, where individuals have to go through various stages, hoping not to get eliminated, while showing their singing abilities and personality. In the end best of the best gets picked, in this case it was 9 of them. I watched the 1st episode, and Nina was the 1st to caught my attention with her singing and dancing. While I haven't watch the entire show, I was hoping she makes it and the very end she did. This was also how Twice was formed, when JYP did a talent survival show called Sixteen.
