Re -Using Old GPU after 5 years

Go to solution Solved by jones177,

I have lots of old GPUs that sat in boxes for years and have had non die when they have been used again.

The last one was my GTX 680 4gb that ran for just over a year and was boxed in 2015. It was in my first 2020 build.

Hi Guys,

I have an old GTX 670 which I stopped using in 2016 when my mobi and cpu died , I recently thought of using it again but I am worried it could die once I start using it , as it's been a long time it was not in use, as a similar thing happened to another GPU of mine .I re-pastedbit  and plugged it in and in about 15 mins it suddenly stopped and never worked again . I read about the heat treatment where people heat up their components to refresh the solder joints , would I need to do the same with my GTX 670 ? As I would have to purchase the soldering station just for one use . Any advice ?

My concern is , is it safe to use the card after 4 years of no use without the heat treatment ? Has anyone had a similar experience ?

don't do the oven trick, just don't.

Use the GTX til it dies, then go buy something newer

Not gonna do that, was planning to purchase a hot air soldering gun , and heat it up .

If it still works then there's no reason to fix it. My dad still has a 770 in his pc that works fine.

Yea , it propably may work, but is it safe to turn it on after so many years of no use ?

Just use it. The over trick or heat gun trick or resolder trick or whatever is a very very temp fix and usually within 1-3 months it breaks and then it's usually done for. It's safe to use it so don't worry.

Hmmm, doesn't it seem more likely that taking it apart, repasting it killed it rather than sitting unused? I mean, sure, it could be bad caps, but that was more of a early 2000's problem.

Yea, I was hoping that was the reason, maybe some past got onto the caps and shorted it, anyways thanks man.
