So my house is big and the wifi downstairs in our basement doesn't work all the way upstairs on the left side of the house in my room. My Dad has a Modem in his office that has a netgear white box connected to it and it works just fine and i wanna get a modem in my room.

I dont have any Ethernet wall ports and i bought a CM700 modem and im wondering if it'll work without me connecting my service provider to it, The customer service for my provider told me i basically can't have 2 modems and she was pretty confused and now i am too.

With the modem plugged into my wall can i just run a cord to my Computer and Playstation or do i need something else connected for it to work?

???? No, you want a router, not a modem.

A modem cannot provide you internet access without a service provider and you can't just add a second random modem to the house. It won't have network access.

You can only use 1 modem for a network, it goes between the ISP connection and the router. What you need is a router or an access point with an Ethernet port, and you will need to plug it into the main router using Ethernet.

If all you want is to it use to communicate between your own devices locally in your room, without internet access, yes.

If you want to use the Nighthawk, you need to connect it to the main router using Ethernet. If you don't already have Ethernet run through the walls, that could be hard to do, especially from a basement to a third story. I think your options are a wifi repeater, which connects to the wifi and boosts the signal, use a powerline adapter, get a stronger router, or move the router to the 2nd floor. I have not had a wifi repeater work well in my experience, it boosts the signal but the speeds suffer, so I would advise against it. Powerline adapters depend on your home's electrical wires, so if your house isn't very or your electrical wires aren't in good condition, powerline adapters may not work. You can get a stronger router, which is the easiest to do, but might not be strong enough to reach the 3rd floor. The best option in my opinion would be to move the router to the second floor if possible

I think what he's going off us in laymans terms, is the big internet box in his dads room is good, and he wants another big internet box in his room, and thinks he can directly copy his dads setup to achieve that.

You typically cannot have more than one modem per network, unless your dad has some sort of very fancy (expensive) business internet package.

You'll need to find a way of routing an ethernet cord from your dad's router to a router (not modem) in your room. If you can't get it all the way to your room, try to see if you can set up an additional router in a room in your house which is at least closer to yours.

My house is about 4000 square feet, The only place i can really place that router looks like my basement which is 3 stories below and to the right of my house while my room is top left. Not sure if i can connect it in my dads room in any way possible.

So i would need a router that can cover a LOT of space and that has fast internet speeds

@danomicar Pretty sure my dad has a modem thats connected to our service provider, if i could somehow run a cable from there to a router in my room would that work?

Of course he does, or else you wouldn’t have internet.

But I thought you said this...

Also im not allowed to run cords through the walls and i can't run it through the hallway so having it direct from my dads office isn't a possibility, not sure where all the Ethernet ports in the house are the only one i know of is downstairs

Not all houses are wired for ethernet. It has to be requested at the time of building so the runs can be planned appropriately.

WiFi signals do not propagate well in the vertical direction because of how antennae are designed. So absolutely NO single wireless router that you place in the basement will give you a decent signal on the 3rd floor at the opposite end of the house. Furthermore, NO single wireless router will be able to provide adequate coverage and wireless performance for that amount of space.

To get better WiFi on all levels you’d need to set up multiple wireless access points (perhaps 1-2 per floor above the basement) directly wired via ethernet to the primary router. Or, you could look into a tri-band mesh WiFi system (maybe with 3-4 units; a wired backhaul is preferred for stability). WiFi repeaters/boosters are terrible and not worth the effort. You’d be lucky if powerline worked decently, but MoCa is possible if you already have coaxial jacks running through the house (might be a bit expensive, though).

If you don’t know much about networking, this can become a complicated and expensive project pretty fast. So, I must ask you to be very specific: what are you trying to achieve here? Do you just need a wired connection in your room? Or does it need to also be wireless? If you want to be on your own internet connection, talk to your father about paying for an entirely new package and have the ISP terminate their end in your room.

Look in to Moca. Two modems pretty much equals two separate internet accounts. So unless you want to pay the provider twice you need run Ethernet, use power line adapters or use Moca.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
