$222 i9-9900 VS. $350 Ryzen 9 3900X for Gaming/Streaming

Taking the price of the two CPU’s into consideration. The i9-9900 is $222. And the Ryzen 9 3900X is $350. Is the i9-9900 better for gaming and streaming at the same time or the Ryzen 9 3900X?

Streaming and gaming the 3900x

The 9900 is locked but that price is compelling it will be decent for streaming and gaming

The 9900 would technically be better for gaming (by 1-2fps) but at that cpu horsepower you are starting to get GPU bound.

It’s an employee thing. I’m not set on the components just yet but I can send what I’m thinking so far for my intel build and AMD Build.

Intel:

AMD:

What’s “GPU bound”, I’m new to this. I’m not upgrading my GPU until the 3000 Series releases.

I'd say go for the AMD build, but I'd suggest a couple changes:

  • for $150 you can get a high-end NVMe SSD, like a WD SN750, Sabrent Rocket or Samsung 970 Evo
  • you don't need even close to 750W for that system, and there are better units than the EVGA G3 out there; I'd go for a Corsair RM550x or be quiet! Straight Power 11 550W instead
  • with a 2080S you can stream using NVENC, so you wouldn't really need the 12C/24T the 3900X offers, especially just for gaming; go for a 3700X or 3600 instead

The reason why I'd advise against the Intel build is that Z390 is a dead platform so you wouldn't have any upgrade path, whereas with X570 you can upgrade to a higher core count Zen 2 part when those drop in price, or you can upgrade to Zen 3 when those launch later this year.

I might add on this

The dark rock pro 4 is almost over kill for every cpu a nhu12s or a dark rock 4 non pro is better value

True, but the ability to run the fans on the cooler at basically non-audible speeds is a bonus in my book.

But yes an NH-U12S will be more than enough for a 3900X.

I’ve heard I don’t need NVME if I’m just gaming and streaming. Do u think NVME will be needed for maps consistently loading like GTA 6 in the future? I’m also waiting to upgrade my GPU to the 3000 Series. The 3000 Series is gonna take a lot of Watts and I heard it’s good to have more Watts than you need. I’m trying to make this my PC with as least upgrades after I build it as possible for as long as possible. Do I game on my CPU and stream off my GPU? Or the other way around?

Possibly we don't know the scale of the maps etc

But an nvme drive will be nice to have

If anything they should be more efficient unless your considering the rumored 3080ti and 3090

How about even GTA 5 right now? Does NVME really help load the map better as you’re going through it? I’m considering those but most like the 3080 Super.

Since you have a 2080 super don't upgrade immediately

It's good for atleast 3 years

I mean, you might not notice a massive difference between SATA and NVME but if they're both at the same price I don't really get why you wouldn't go for the NVMe. If not for the better performance, an M.2 drive will at least save you the hassle of having to run SATA power and data cables.

Regarding power consumption of Ampere, we don't have any official data on that as of yet. It's all rumours at the moment.

Oh no I don’t have a 2080 super. That’s the build I’m thinking of getting. The 2080 super is a place holder for the 3080 Super

How are they the same price? I want a 2TB SSD. There’s no way there’s a NVMe SSD at the same price as a SATA one for the same size

You've put a 1TB SSD in your parts list though.

I said that those aren’t what I’m deciding on definitely. I have to see what happens after I get my CPU. Plus even 1TB there aren’t any SATA and NVMe SSD’s that cost the same at the same size
