CL 11 Memory

Go to solution Solved by mariushm,

I saw it, but it looks like it's regular DDR3, running at 1.5v. Yeah, it's a good deal, and it won't be much performance loss running memory at 1333 mhz ... but i doubt you're gonna find lots of buyers for your current stick of memory, so it's most likely just gonna stay on your desk or somewhere unused.

It's tempting to buy because quantity for money, but kinda pointless in the end.

Are you talking about ddr3 ?

it has a timing of 11-11-11-28?

We know that cl 11 means that the first value is 11 but the trc etc can be different lol

If you mean both sticks

Then not always if the two sticks have different cas latency / trc etc the imc could (under line could ) get confused but it could work aswell

Like one of them is 1.35 and the other one is 1.5?

Then that's ddr3l and ddr3

If your talking about a laptop

If it runs at ddr3l then get another ddr3l stick

Oh k i was looking through amazon to upgrade my laptop and found a RAM that says ddr3 4gigs with 1.5v and cl 11.

My current one is a 4gigs ddr3 1.35v with timings of 11-11-11-28. That led to this whole confusion😵

Your current memory is DDR3L  ... L is for low voltage, 1.35v - the standard DDR3 voltage is 1.5v

You should buy DDR3L (1.35v) memory, the laptop may tolerate a stick running at 1.5v but will have to power both sticks with 1.5v so in theory, your original stick will run at higher voltage and may be hotter, or may simply break after some time.

If the memory timings are different, the BIOS will pick the compatible timings, the ones supported by both sticks.

Also keep in mind that timings are dependant on frequency. For example, you may have DDR3 1066 Mhz CL 11, but another stick may be DDR3 1866 Mhz CL15 - this very stick may have built in presets for 1600 Mhz CL14 and DDR3 1333 Mhz CL12 and DDR 1066 CL11.  The high frequency stick can run at lower frequencies with lower (better) timings.

It would help if you tell us the frequency. It would help even more if you could paste a screen shot of CPU-Z , the SPD tab in particular  but other pages would also help.

It's not hard, just hold  Alt+PrintScreen to put that cpu-z window in Clipboard and you can press Ctrl+V in the comment box to directly paste the picture here.

Thank you so much that explaned a lot. I understand it now... So the most important things to keep in mind are frequency, voltage and type, if the timings are close enough the bios will even them out am I right?

Yeah, if one is CL11 and the other is CL12, bios should choose the CL12 ,... as that one is weaker.

Like I said, see the edit in the post above... if you paste screenshots of CPU-Z to see the ram you have i may be able to give you suggestions for what to buy... hopefully you're in US, as I don't see your country

Ok I am posting the CPUZ Screenshots, but unfortnately i do not live in the US I live in India and tech stuff are overpriced here.I did find the same model of RAM as my current one on amazon.com but it will not ship to me. I wanted to uprade my old laptop to dual channel so it will run better hence all the hassle.

If your laptop supports 8 GB sticks, go for this one: Amazon.in: Buy Kingston 8GB PC3L 1600MHz Laptop RAM (KVR16LS118) Online at Low Prices in India | Kingston Reviews & Ratings

If you need 4 GB , this one will work (it's 1866 mhz, but will also work at 1600 mhz as your current stick) :

Amazon.in: Buy HyperX 4GB 1866MHz DDR3L CL11 1.35V SODIMM HyperX Impact Laptop Memory HX318LS11IB/4 Online at Low Prices in India | HyperX Reviews & Ratings

Other sticks on Amazon India : https://in.pcpartpicker.com/products/memory/#xcx=0&U=3&t=9&B=1200000000,1350000000&sort=price&page=1

Double check each entry, because some prices may be better on amazon.com  (just not updated on pc part picker)
