Red komodo is close to public release

RED the makers of expensive cinema cameras is coming out with a new model soon. The Komodo a 6k small body camera for around 6k with early colored editions being 7k. Red hydrogen can be used with it and those who bought one can get a discount.

Its a super 35 sensor like most cinema cameras

Uses canons new RF mount meaning it can be adapted to almost everything other than Sony E mount.

6k recording is only in redcode raw

Pro res is available in 4k, 2k and HD

Uses CFast 2.0 cards not redmags

powered by canon BP batteries

It does 6k 17:9 at up to 40, 6k 2.4:1 or 5k up to 48, 4k 60, 2k 120

Has phase detection AF which is rare in most cinema cameras All of canons have it branded as Dual Pixel AF and some of  Sonys new ones have it as well

3.5mm mic no XLR

 

My thoughts:

I'm interested in this but the lack of XLR will make it a hard sell for solo doc filmmakers. This will likely force canon to refresh the C200 and maybe the C100 however this can really hurt companies like kinefinty and z-cam.

It isn't the cheapest 6k camera that going to the pocket 6k at 2k but that needs at least 1k spend to getting set up right.

the Kinefinity Mavo 6k is almost the same price as the Komodo at 7k for a running body with a lens mount. for those who want FF at 6k the Mavo 6kFF is 10k for a running body

also looks pretty compact, but for some reason still looks large o_o

the A7 doesn't really compete. it doesn't have the high end codes and raw without an external recorder. its more competing Panasonic S1H but even that needs an external recorder. (add 500-1K for a Atmos) 

Nothing know about the RF cine camera or how the R5 would compete.

 

its a cine camera they are never small. its about the same size a a Kinefinity given its about 4x4x4 without any add-ons

do you know how much is shot on ARRI? that use to be 2.8K now 3.2K unless you talking about LF variants or 65

ARRI is really the camera to beat and there is a rumor they will make a more affordable camera which for them means maybe 15K vs 35-40K for a mini

hey its cheap for a red but even then they'll never get my money.
Nothing about cinema cameras are cheap. renting even an older one can be 500$ a week vs the 6K it costs.

Its according to reds CEO been a 5 year project designed to be C and Crash cam for getting into small spaces while still looking good. while also being a documentary camera but to me the lack of XLR makes that a hard sell for solo or extremely small teams

 

Reds sister company also owned by the CEO called Global Dynamics united has some stuff already for the Kamodo including modified canon 24 and 40mm f2.8 to RF and a beefy body

the CEO, it  means your expected to use an external recorder or just not need sound. however there are some decent 3.5mm shotguns out. you could also feed in xlr gear via a recorder and not or dual record on it.

Oh, I get that.  But releasing a pro level camera with the lamest of audio input jacks seems pretty cheap.  Not everyone wants to pack an external recorder.

I agree the close camera though is a mavo 6k which is 8.5K ready to go vs the 7K I'd expect out the red. (1K worth of batteries+media)

 

canon really needs to refresh the C100 with a like 2.5-2.8k recording and the C200/C200B needs and update with better recording options along with higher frame rates

 

I just completely forgot about the Panasonic AU-EVA1 5.7k EF, dual XLR but only 4k internal recording. let me read some
