£700 budget build please help

Budget (including currency): £700(can go up to £750)

Country: United Kingdom

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (for now)

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

this build is going to be for a friend of mine that i will help him build. i can build the pc i just need help picking the parts. for the CPU i have a spare i5-8400 that i can give to him for £135, and for the CPU Cooler i have a Cooler Master i71c that i will give to him for free and i do have a stick of 8gb ddr4 2400mhz ram but i was thinking of just getting him a new set of 2x8gb 2666mhz ram (how much difference is there between 2666mhz and 2400mhz?) and you can leave the peripherals and monitor out. He also wants the "NZXT H510 Matte Black Red" case, and he would like to game on at least a stable 144fps at 1080p.

If you wanted a higher capacity ssd than this, you could get a 1660 super instead as that is cheaper.

The 1600 af may be a downgrade from the 8400 but for the price you can't beat it.

With the 1660 Ti you would be able to get that 144 fps on 1080p high or medium quality.

In the future, copy the link in the top right of the PCPP list just for ease of the forum. The OP can see the full price of the system and other members can edit the list.

My friend says he can go up to £800 so i was thinking of maybe just getting a AMD Ryzen 5 3600 or 3600X, but on pcpp it says that we might need a BIOS update to support it. what other motherboard would you recommend?

Dude, thats too much for a 2 gen old cpu. Something like this can be had for brand new for around $20-30 more which will be a much better buy. Also both of them outperform the 8400.

Core i5 10400F - $164.99

Can I go into the BIOS of the motherboard even if it doesn't support the CPU that is inside the motherboard?

Get the max series b450 motherboards from MSI. They support Ryzen 3*** series processors out of the box. So no need of a bios update.

Here is what I will recommend. Way better build here....

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor  (£154.99 @ Amazon UK)
Motherboard: MSI B450M PRO-VDH MAX Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard  (£73.79 @ CCL Computers) Great Mobo for its price.
Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 CL16 Memory  (£64.98 @ Amazon UK) 2*8gb 3200mhz cl16 kit.
Storage: Crucial P1 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive  (£101.98 @ Amazon UK) Decent budget nvme drive.
Video Card: MSI Radeon RX 5700 8 GB GAMING X Video Card  (£339.40 @ Alza) Way better GPU compared to 1660ti. This is a pretty great entry level 1440p card. Also the gaming x is one of the best rx5700 out there.
Case: Aerocool Aero One Mini Eclipse MicroATX Mini Tower Case  (£51.45 @ Ebuyer) Decent case for it's price. Comes with 4 argb fans.
Power Supply: Corsair TXM Gold 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply  (£79.98 @ Currys PC World Business) Apparently the 550w and 750w units were available for the same price. So went with the higher wattage unit.
Total: £866.57

what if i swapped that SSD to a 500gb one and add a 1 or 2tb hdd

i think that would be better
i checked and i can save £40 to £50 for swapping the SSD to a 500gb one and i can use that £50 for a 2tb hdd

Adding a mass storage drive in future is as easy as popping in a new drive. So, 1tb is probably a better buy.

With the seagate barracuda drives 2 tbs is only a little bit cheaper than 1 tb.

And the 1600 I had in the list is the AF version, it is basically a 2600.

And also, I had the 2666 memory because that generation of ryzen only supports up to 2933 Mhz.

The 1600af is an incredible budget CPU...unfortunately, these days they are near impossible to find for the $85USD they went for when they were first released.
