PhenixFel
Go to solution Solved by PhenixFel,

It had been solved! I basically had to update bios lol like waaaaaaat I got a 2070 for free and using it at 4x lol heck yeah

I just got gifted a Gigabyte rtx 2070 free from a friend and but there's a problem. He was experimenting with it. He chopped off like half of the pci gold metal contacts lol. I installed it into my computer and it doesn't post. I gives me 4 beeps and shuts down.. I don't know what was going thru his head. I would like to see if anyone can tall me if I'm wasting my time. If I can use it please tell me. See attached photo.

That is never going to work again I am afraid.

He was probably testing to see if it would run at 8x speed and decided to cut off the rest of the connector in order to test that idea...

Edit: If the card is still under warranty... I'd be genuinely interested to see if the card can be RMA'd.

My Rig:

It is destroyed and you cannot get it back. I guess if you really wanted to run it, you would have to get a donor card, chop off the pcie connection off of that, but that still wouldn't work so, it's dead.

All things considered, this is theoretically possible. You can actually put a graphics card into a smaller slot and be fine. (You are reducing the number of PCIe connections, from x16 -> x8). My big concern is shorting out the conductors he's cut, as well as separating PCB layers. You're probably wasting time, as it looks like there are separated layers already. (Notice the bubbling around the GIGABYTE logo)

Next time, tell your friend to cut the back out of the PCIe connector. Motherboards (and PCIe connectors) are much cheaper than a RTX 2070.

I wouldn't waste any time on the card. It's likely dead for good.

This is because the card can still gain power from the PCI-E slot. However, half of it's data lines effectively were severed so it will not work in terms of being able to display anything.

That makes alot of sense. I guess this card can be used to fix other cards.

Potentially. I'd be genuinely very interested to see if this can be RMA'd though if it is still under warranty.

Well the guy didn't keep any of the packaging and removed the stickers in the back of the card. I wouldn't be surprised if they said "wth no"

at that point, it can only be sold for parts. like for people that does the reballing to salvage the Vram, VRM, the GPU chip and stuff. otherwise, it looks completely dead. unless you can extend the PCIE lanes and have another GPU you can sacrifice and fix the connections. though it would be pretty hard it will have lower conductibility than gold. Unless you solder it with gold which is pretty much a hard thing to do.

Does it have to be another 2070 to fix the connections? I have 4 1060s and a 1070. I am completely down for fixing it. Too bad linus media group hasn't made a video about it.

it could even be a GTX 480. i dont think PCIE lanes changed much since 2010 or 2012. though, im telling you its risky and not even guaranteed to work.

haha if I can get a 2070 outta this I am okay with collateral damage. I have a few motherboards I can test this card when fixing it.

do a bit of research though. many PCB especially in the computer components usually have layered circuits in them. if that part happens to be not layered, the chance could be higher.
