CALLING ALL FLOATPLANE FANS: Help write the Floatplane Wikipedia article!

Calling all Floatplane fans and writers! I have created a stub article for Floatplane. I put as much information as I could, but I need more citations and much more information.

The article is located here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floatplane_(Website)

EDIT: The Wikipedia moderator that flagged it for deletion turned the page into a Draft, which was the only alternative to being deleted. The draft is located here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Floatplane_(Website)

Items most notably needed:

  • We need a "credible indication" of the importance or significance of the website. Wikipedia requires this for all articles, otherwise they are deleted quickly. Their criteria for speedy deletion is: "an article about a website, blog, web forum, webcomic, podcast, browser game, or similar web content that does not credibly indicate the importance or significance of the subject."
  • Floatplane logo. Logos cannot be added to Wikipedia unless they are public domain or if the authors have permission to use them.
  • Better explanation of the subscription model
  • History of development; when it became a company, when Luke started work on the website and when they hired full-time developers
  • Features — e.g. high bitrate video, community posting, etc., and citations for those advertised features
  • More information in the info card (Most of these items can be found on YouTube's wiki info fard; e.g. Type of business, type of site, date founded, headquarters(?), area served, founder(s), key people, industry, launch date, and "written in" (prog. languages)
  • Source for info about the company Floatplane Media Inc.

I'm not a writer, but I did my absolute best to get this page started. Now I'm leaving it for all of you! Please reply to this thread with any comments or additions, so that we can get some good momentum going for writing out Floatplane's article. Thank you for your help!

I am not familiar with how to edit Wikipedia articles, so I'm just gonna post some sources for some stuff here:

Spoiler

^when they started hiring for coders (and they also mention using Node.JS here, which I assume the project is written in too).

As far as I know, Luke started working on this from basically when they thought of it. The first time they announced Floatplane, is in that forum thread/video that you have already linked as a source.

As far as I know, they sent this to their Vessel subscribers first (but don't quote me on that, I wasn't a Vessel subscriber at that point anymore).

I am pretty sure the Floatplane HQ is just a building over from the LMG offices. It used to be in the LMG office.

This video maybe mentions something about that?

Spoiler

Floatplane sadly does not have a page like Linusmediagroup.com, showing its employees. I do know Luke is a pretty important person there ;) And I think AJ is the head programmer? He lists himself as a "System and Network Administrator at FloatPlaneMedia." on his Twitter. https://twitter.com/AJJaxNet

Here are the other users on this forum mentioned as 'Floatplane staff': https://linustechtips.com/main/search/?&type=core_members&joinedDate=any&group[28]=1

Plus, there is also our beloved forum dev, colonel_mortis who also has the 'FPC Engineer' badge: https://linustechtips.com/main/profile/10813-colonel_mortis/

But this all (except for Luke), is probably too.. Not official information.

The first video I linked does have some more information on the goal of Floatplane. It is another revenue stream - a more direct one - since YouTube's monetization system and channel deletion stuff is quite volatile (the ad system more-so now even).

If there are people who are better at editing Wikipedia, they should definitely edit the page! If no one steps in, I would be glad to help.

I am far from a writer, but I have written my fair share of posts and know my way around a keyboard :P

EDIT: oh and maybe this video has some good information, since it's from a first hand source (Luke).

Thank you! I'll first add as much info to the right-hand info card as I can.

I still personally don't understand the importance or significance of the site myself.

Doesn't YouTube's join/membership feature sort of make floatplane redundant at this point?

Not necessarily.

I'm not a Floatplane expert so some of this could be wrong, but: One of the benefits is to diversify one's audience to avoid putting all their eggs in one basket. So if YouTube suddenly goes away (which does happen: see the video at the bottom)

And secondly, the videos can be offered as early-access, plus they can include exclusive videos there, unlike on YouTube. Also, videos are of a higher bitrate/quality.

After some thought, I've come to the realization that Floatplane isn't really ready for an encyclopedia (Wikipedia) entry yet. There's very few news articles about it yet, and so far it hasn't had a chance to leave an impact on the internet yet. I didn't intend to write the whole article, but instead wanted to get the ball rolling for others to help on it. But I didn't know enough about Wikipedia at that point to know that we weren't at a stage where Floatplane should be on the site.

I don't know whether the draft (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Floatplane_(Website)) will get deleted in time; so here is the source markup for what was written so far.

==History==
Floatplane was initially called ''Floatplane Club'', which was introduced in November 2016 as an alternative to [[Vessel (website)|Vessel]]. Over the course of several years, Floatplane was developed into its own website, with the goal of becoming a service that other online creators can use. I hope that this can be used sometime in the future. But if not, well, I had a good try. :)
