Mic echo through open back headphones (DT990 Pro) on discord

Weird issue I can't fix other than switching to closed back headphones. 

 

I have a pair of DT990s I use with Discord but my friends complain they can hear themselves through my end. This is confirmed by the echo being louder when moving my headphones closer to the mic. It's not a problem most of the time because the gate stops it, but if we are talking at same time there is often an echo of them through my setup...

 

Any tips?

Tips? Yeah, you're going to hate me for this but don't use open-back headphones for gaming or voice calls. 
They act that way by design, like, nothing is going wrong, this is what happens when they work perfectly.
It sucks, but this is why nobody here recommends open-back headphones for gamers or using Discord.

I disagree with @The Flying Sloth here.

 

Are your headphones set too loud? Is your microphone boosted too much? Is your discord/app voice sensitivity set too low?

Are you using the correct sound drivers? Did you disable the setting in Windows sound control panel that reduces some volume when it detects woice chats?

What kind of a microphone are you using? Which soundcard/dac? Amp? Audio interface for the microphone? Voice detection or push to talk?

 

I know a lot of people using open-back headphones for gaming (especially competitive), for streaming and so on.

The settings have to be set properly and the right equipment should be used. Even with closed cans.

It's a a AT2010 Mic with a Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 Gen3 interface. Discord voice gate is set to where it should be(not on when not talking)

 

I thought it wouldn't be a problem as well since I see other people using open back headphones. I don't use a particularly loud volume.

I use a cheap  Condenser and open backs with gaming and s

Discord no one can hear themselves and even when in game. I've only ever detected any sort of echo when recording myself raw. But easily fixed with voice meeter . All you have to do to fix this on discord is turn the noise floor up on the discord settings. If that doesn't work there is probably cross talk somehow internally through the pc

He already has the gate up, they can only hear themselves while he's talking. My understanding of the discord sensitivity settings are that they really can't do anything to help in this situation.
Discord does have built in echo cancellation and noise removal but echo setting is on by default and the noise removal one tanks sound qality.

He's already confirmed it's coming from the mic by putting the headphones closer to the mic and noticing how the volume increases, I'm not aware of crosstalk that would behave in this way, besides, those Scarlett interfaces are built to a standard, maybe it's not a crazy high one but weird crosstalk isn't a complaint I've ever heard for them.
The 2010 looks to be a fairly wide cardioid which isn't ideal when using really open headphones at high volumes though OP states he doesn't use them at a high volume.
This is why I made the statement I did, he's already talked through most of those points.

OP, if the mic is in front of your mouth and you're not turning your head so that the mic is next to the drivers I'm really not sure what else can be done, sorry.

He's already explained that he's using the Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 Gen3 and the DT990 PRO which are the 250 ohm version....

Not all pro models are 250 ohm . Also the sensitivity setting is what changed it for me personally. Also simply turning my mic gain down as well and just putting my mic closer to my mouth fixed it. But different mic different pick up pattern .

I didn't catch that he was using the recording interface as a headphone output. That's not what I'd recommend since monitoring can be mixed in and some other stuff too.

Mixing in monitoring is by choice and a very useful feature in small-scale studios.
The DAC and amplifiers in decent interfaces are designed to a very high standard so they can be used for mixing/mastering.

I'd agree that a properly set mic shouldn't be picking up open backed headphones at safe listening levels. Either the mic gain is too high or OP is damaging his hearing.

My bad, I read an extremely misinformed explanation of the naming system.

Do you have any advice for this scenario? I have a pair of headphones I want to use with my audio interface but the cable is too short and non-detachable. i can't really move the interface any closer. If I plug the headphones into my PC however, then I won't get audio out the speakers I have plugged into my interface as well as I believe I can only select one sound output in Windows. Does that  make sense?
