AMD Duron 600mhz 0c

Hey,
I bought a AMD Duron 600mhz yesterday and received it in the mail today.
However, my bios sees it as a AMD Duron 800mhz and the temp shows up as 0c. Before this I had a AMD Sempron 3000+ (Obviously faster etc but I don't need the speed :) )
Because it shows up incorrectly and has a wrong Celsius value, the fans ramp up to 100% the whole time. Oddly enough, inside the BIOS the fans are at an OK speed (Still a bit fast but ok). After leaving the BIOS and even trying to boot to a floppy, the fans go to 100%.
My other CPU, the sempron, works just fine with the correct temps etc and the fan is very quiet. Even when inside Windows..

My motherboard is a7v8x-la, it has the correct socket and this Duron CPU is older than the one I had in it before. It should work just fine and is supported. I already tried updating the bios to the latest version with nothing changing. (3.15)

Do you have any idea or is this cpu just.. dead? It works fine but the fans are wayyyyyyyyy too loud..

Some information to sum it up:

a7v8x-la Mobo

AMD duron 600 CPU (yes 600 not 800 even though it says it’s 800, the numbers on the cpu say 600)

I tried 2 psu, 135 watt and 400 watt

BIOS version 3.15

The AMD sempron 3000+ works normal and shows 49c. If I use fanspeed to check the temps of the duron, it says 29c and -48c. Changing the fan speeds from there doesn’t work, they’ll go down as you change it but go back to 100% a second later.
core temp shows 0c (It’s a single core cpu btw)
I cleaned everything well and it’s not the first time I put a PC together. (I had to assemble PC’s many many times for my internships including servers etc haha and repair multiple pcs/laptops on the daily) So I have my doubts that I put something in wrongly hehe

If you have any idea, let me know :)

if not, I will contact the seller and hit him up. I bought it at some store

What I have tried;

Clearing cmos, default bios settings, Cleaning the CPU very well since you can overclock it with a pencil(So I have heard), Different psu, reseating it, updating the bios, reinstalling windows xp (I had to else I couldn’t install the bios since I was stuck in an activation loop and yes I tried to extend the 30day trial a few times but it stopped working) and lastly just cleaning it and other stuff some more so it’s dust free. (With care)

Not exactly the best motherboard in the world for socket A.

Look for a board with NF2 chipset. You'll have a lot more flexibility with it over the VIA chipset.

Cool rig. I like it :D

BTW speedfan says -48c for the cpu.. I feel like the cpu is just damaged or the sensor is dead.

Try GPU-Z sensors tab. Near the bottom, it will have a cpu temp reading.

You do have the SMBUS and GART drivers installed right?

Need some help, there are a fist full of old school Guru clockers at Warp9-systems.com. (Not an ad, that's my benching team site)

Yes I have all the right drivers and the right config for my motherboard for speedfan and in the bios it says 0c / 32f and I will try that next :)

I’ve figured out that it’s running at 800mhz because the busspeed is at 266 mhz (133mhz x2) and its designed for 200mhz (100 x2) and it has a x6 multiply so 100 x 6 = 600. But it runs at 133 x 6 aka 800mhz. The chipset supports 200, the motherboard runs at 266.
Could this be the reason why it doesn’t show any temps?

GPU-Z just crashes at start up and older versions only show gpu info for my FX 5200.

CPU-Z shows no temps but does show the bus speed etc

It may just not be supported by that bios for some reason.

It is a 600mhz, but whos to argue a 200mhz oc?? Lol.

Try cpu 1.59 or 1.41.

As far as the temps go, you're kinda screwed it looks like. Probably not running hot though.

I kinda bought it because I wanted it to be slow and low wattage etc since what I plan on using it for doesn’t need any power at all 😁 If I wanted speed, I could put my AMD Sempron 3000+ in..

it has PC3200 ram btw.
Changing the FSB with setFSB (ICS950910AF Clock Generator / PLL) results in the PC freezing or getting a no ram beeping error. (Changing the 133mhz to 100mhz)

Still don’t know if it is the reason why the sensor doesn’t work though. Maybe it is because of this “overclock” but I’m not sure.

I have too many options rn either getting a different motherboard (I want microATX and firewire is nice too so I can charge an iPod if I want eh I don’t have a brick), buy different RAM (pc1600) or buy a new Duron CPU 🤪

I will probably need to get a different motherboard from what I have learned thus far if I want to use that Duron 600mhz. Very hard to get though since the ones sold near me don’t support it

I found a MSI KM3M-V near me which I will probably get if I can get a good price hehe

Look for the PLL Chip on the board to match the clock generator.

Also remember the PCI is not locked so drastic changes will cause issues and possible corruption.

That MSI board is going to be the same deal. In fact I had one. They dont overclock either.

Any board you look for must have NForce 2 chipset. That's what you would want to find.

I had the exact PLL chip matched etc I could slowly take a few mhz off but if it was sitting at 130mhz it would freeze after some time.

I looked this msi board up and you can put some jumpers into the right position to use a 100mhz fsb setting and people said they got their Duron 650mhz working on their board like this.. which is what I want 😜

nForce would be amazing but it would be nearly impossible to get though.. or super expensive

I don’t want to overclock, I want to underclock or use the default 600mhz speed :)

And mATX.. I looked around quite a bit and haven’t been able to find one with nForce and this msi board is $28 with a cpu, ram and shield

I appreciate the help though!

The PC I am building isn’t going to be a gaming rig, mostly Pascal stuff or low demanding games etc which is why I wanted to use this Duron 600mhz as it uses less wattage then my Sempron 3000+.

I understand. Even though old and dated, sought after NF2 os not cheap even today.

Its probably more a cpu thing than the board but you wont find out till u try it

Yep some parts can be cheap if it’s local but eBay has more to offer but a price to pay (especially shipping + tax)

For example, this msi board I saw is 28 including the cpu and ram but I saw the same board without the extras for $138 online (Overpriced ? )

Short supply makes parts expensive.

If the demand stays low, the prices will lower.

Cant believe the prices on some of the processors. Wtf!

Yup. Wanted to snag a 3000+ but then saw the price. Funk dat.

I have a 2600+ and 2400+ and a few others Id have to look at see what they are.

Currently running a 1600+ that will hit 1800mhz on a good day.

Cpuz wont validate it though....
