MSI R9 290 GAMING or Gigabyte 780 GHz Edition?

Alastor

Same price, I want the card to last for 4 years.

There are a lot of problems with the 290 and MSI with their oil leaking issues, how's Gigabyte? People say that it is poor quality. Or maybe wait even more?

How's the EVGA 780 where you live? I'd go with that.

I own a 780 GHz, quality is really good. Cooler is pretty hard to beat, 8+2 phase design with direct cooling. Works with Skynet bios for 1.21v, works with reference volt mod for 1.5v+.

Only thing I don't like is it doesn't clock as well as some binned chips like the classy/lightning but its faster than most water cooled 290x chips so I can't complain much.

Go for the 290 you get more memory and Mantle.

Plus they're beast overclockers.

Also Mantle makes a huge difference and a lot of games are coming out for it like the new Mass Effect, Dragon Age and Thief.

PCGH refuses to use 8.1 despite the massive gains obtainable for Nvidia.

MSI Gaming is designed more towards silent operation, it doesn't have a lot of thermal dissipation compared to other aftermarket cards. The 290 is a pretty mediocre overclocker, and has a nasty power addiction. You'll be lucky to do 1200 with 1.4v, but unlikely to be able to sustain it with the Gaming cooler.

Win 8.1 shows massive gains for AMD as well.
in fact puts the 290X on top of the Titan.

PClab's benchmarks have already been shown to be unreliable.
They have a track record of dubious benchies.. Back in bf3 days they actually claimed gpu bound scenario during CQ expansion,in a MP bench-all i5s reporting same averages regardless of clocks (ridiculous).

GameGPU confirmed PCGameHardware's tests as well, with the 290X beating out the 780 TI with Mantle in multiplayer.

GameGPU uses Windows 7, there were also recent updates that increased Nvidia's performance under 8.1.

The 780 GHz is faster than the Titan.

Non reference 290s are faster than TItan even in 4K which is Titan's specialty with 6GB.

I own a TwinFrozr r9 290 and the card is great so far. Playing games like Witcher 2, FC3. COD:Ghosts all on max 60 fps no problem. Temps at full load is typically at 65-67c and this is with my case fans running 50% and ac turned off in a tropical climate. Build quality is awesome and the card comes with a backplate so thats a plus.

Generally though you can't go wrong with the Twinfrozr or Windforce 780. Both are great cards from reliable companies. Really I would go with whichever is cheaper.

Another Windows 7 result. Also the OP said they're the same price for him.

It doesn't need much headroom, an overclocked 1100MHz 290 won't even beat a stock 780 GHz.

Headroom with voltage is fine for the GHz, besides anything after stock is just icing on the cake when compared to the 290.

I see a lot of people with all kinds of serious issues with the 290, also, MSI has this oil leaking going on. These can pop up anytime and that's what bugs me. I don't want the card to die in a few months. BTW I'm not planning on overclocking, it doesn't worth it IMO. I've ordered the 290 yesterday but I'll cancel it if turn out that these issues are common. The price of the 780 dropped by about $25, that's why it's the same price, hopefully it won't go back up before I manage to decide.

That's a 290x.

OP isn't asking about a 900MHz 780.

Same performance.

780 has an average boost of 990mhz and often boosts over 1000mhz.

Already proved that AMD GPUs gain the same performance with Win 8.1 so stop bringing up a mute point.

The 780 Ghz doesn't have much headroom at all, MSI R9 290 has plenty of headroom left & runs quieter than the 780 Ghz.

Also has completely unlocked voltage control unlike the Nvidia cards due to greenlight program.

R9 290 has more memory & supports mantle both of which will allow the card to last longer which is what the OP wants.

Nvidia gains more under 8.1, and until the Mantle patch Dice was holding out Tiled Resources support for Nvidia GPUs. With less gpu bound settings they gain even more.

Mine boosts to 1130 out of the box, I've had it up to 1370, and can 24/7 1306MHz fairly easily. There is just as much, if not more headroom with a 780 GHz than with a 290 Gaming, both because 290s don't clock well and because the cooler isn't as good and the 290 outputs considerably more heat through excessive power consumption.

Nvidia supports G-Sync which allows the OP to run higher settings at lower FPS with smoother viewing. Unlike Mantle however, it won't be limited to just a few titles as it works in everything.

Considering he isn't overclocking, that's all the more reason to go for the card which is noticeably faster out of the box and costs the same.

I wanted the 290 badly but I cancelled it and got the 780 instead. A lot less problems, hopefully it will be a good card.
