I made the mistake of buying ram before i purchased the mobo. Reviewing the mobo specs for ram on the MSI X470 gaming pro carbon, it shows up to 3200 for the gskill trident series.  I purchased a 3600 2x8gb kit, and wondering if it will still work or if ill run into any problems

It will work, just maybe not 3600MHz. That depends on CPU.

the cpu i have is the ryzen 5 3600 but im thinking of upgrading to the ryzen 7 3700x.  would it work with the ryzen 5 3600?

it should work with both at 3600mhz

1. dont upgrade

2. it has nothing to do with the CPU.

3. MSI X470 gaming pro carbon is not ryzen 3000 ready unless the retail box has a sticker on it saying so. Is the store able to update the bios? or do you have an older CPU?

ryzen third gen is much better with RAM overclocking, i think u will have zero issues, just go into BIOS and enable D.O.C.P or XMP profile and u are set, it should boot

i live near outletPC so they're able to update the bios if needed.

what is the model number of the kit your bought?

Keep in mind All DDR4 RAM runs at 2133/2400MHz at stock, on most AM4 motherboards 2666MHz is considered overclocking so your mileage may vary. Even with a kit rated at 3200Mhz it is not always achievable.

 

But enabling DOCP (XMP) mode within your Bios basically auto OC's your memory to it's rated speed, if you get a blue screen crash with memory codes you know it's because of your memory OC and you will likely need to manually clock it (not hard).
