Posted April 28, 2020 TL;DR: PC froze while gaming then went into a startup loop failing to POST, cleared CMOS and then only the fans would power on without any display output or LEDs on mouse and keyboard. Basically, about an hour ago I was in the middle of a CS:GO match when my computer suddenly froze, as if it was going to blue screen. I waited for 15-20 seconds before I tried restarting it, but the restart button didn't do anything so I ended up shutting it down after holding the power button for a longer time than usual (about 10 seconds). Powering the system back on lead it into a powerup loop, as in it would power on, fans started spinning (I can't recall unfortunately if mouse/keyboard LEDs were lighting up) but before anything popped up on the display it would power off, then power back on. This would happen every 2-3 seconds, and turning off the PSU, then turning it back on and starting up the PC again didn't change anything. Since it was close to 2AM when this happened (writing this at almost 3AM now) I really wasn't feeling like trying a whole lot. What I did try though is clearing CMOS (which also resulted in having to reseat the graphics card). After clearing the CMOS what would happen is the PC would power on, with all the fans powering on in the system, but I would have no output on the screen and the keyboard/mouse LEDs wouldn't turn on either (the LEDs on the motherboard and graphics card were on though). Plugging the display cable into the motherboard directly also didn't result in any video output on the screen. The CPU and GPU were running at stock speeds when this happened, with the RAM running with its default XMP profile. The only thing altered was the CPU's VCCIO voltage which I turned down 1-2 months back (since it was way too high by default), but I've never had any issues because of that so I doubt that it's had anything to do with this. Temps were also in check: GPU in the high 60s, CPU in the 70s as CS:GO is more CPU dependant. My guess at the moment would be that the motherboard's toast unfortunately, since there doesn't seem to be any power going from it to the connected peripherals, but I'm obviously shooting in the dark here as I haven't done much in the way of troubleshooting yet other than resetting the CMOS. I'd love to hear some ideas about what you think might've happened and any suggestions to what I could try, before I start tearing everything up tomorrow (which I'm not really looking forward to tbh). I powered on/off the PSU multiple times during this whole thing but I've left it turned off now, until I get back to it in the morning. Leaving it powered off fully and holding the power button for 10 seconds (with PSU off) drains any extra power left in the motherboard, believe it or not this has fixed issues with more than one of my builds. So I would try that in the morning before potentially taking it apart. It actually turned out to be a dead RAM stick, pretty odd considering it's been working without any sort of hiccup for the past 8-9 months, but I guess it's still better than a dead board. Single-channel 16GB is still better than no desktop at all haha. Hopefully I can RMA just the single dead RAM stick and I don't have to send the whole kit back. But you will most likely need to send the entire kit back, I had a similar issue a few years back and Corsair was really good about it, I sent my old kit and they sent me an entirely new kit within a day or two of getting mine, I was back up and running in less than 7 business days. Luckily it shattered when off the case, so best case scenario in this situation, and it's just a side panel, I can still use the system daily. Legitimate hardware RMA is a worse boat to be in right now, you can't use a PC without RAM... So hopefully you aren't waiting to long, might be worth checking your local used market, if you need to send the entire kit back you might want to see if you can pickup a used stick of RAM, could be a long wait. What wouldn't be great though is apps I actually need for uni that I've only got on my main desktop, that'd really be a problem.
