At the moment I own a oneplus 2, which hasn't received updates in a long time (2017), so i'm looking for a new phone.

I've been out of the loop when it comes to new phones and upcoming phones, that's why I'm looking for some advice. I've been looking at the OP8, Lite and Pro, but I don't like the punch hole in the screen, especially since I don't use the selfie camera. The oneplus 7T pro looks pretty good, but since it's an older model, I feel like OP decides to stop updating it in 2 years again and i'm left buying another phone - if this is not the case, please let me know, as this looks like a really good phone to me. Perhaps the 8 lite could be interesting, but I believe it also has a punchhole.

So basically i'm looking for some advice on my options for a good phone (not too big) that lasts me a while (in terms of updates), is fast, no punchhole and costs about 700 or less euro/dollar.

In case there's an interesting upcoming phone, I am able to wait a month or so in case it might be worth it.

Thank you!

It will likely get one more major os update and then another one for security patches. The 7t pro is just a refreshed 7 pro with more ram and storage. I would suggest the Xiaomi Redmi K30 Pro as it has a better processor, no punch hole design and is cheaper.

OnePlus is really like any Android typical manufacturer with its two-year support; it just delivers updates more quickly and consistently than some (looking at you, Samsung).  If you want more than that, you basically need to get an iPhone.

If you'd prefer Android, I say go for the standard OnePlus 8.  Hole-punch cameras really aren't that bad -- you'll get used to it being there.  And you'd get the benefits that come with OnePlus, like the high performance and responsive interface.  The only things I don't really like about it from what I've seen are the so-so cameras and the lack of wireless charging, but it'd still be a step up for you in terms of camera quality and wired charging speed.

The Xiaomi K30 Pro looks absolutely sick!
Having heard of the brand, but never really investigated it. Is this a reliable brand?

I'll probably get this K30 Pro after researching it a bit, on paper it looks like all I want in a phone.

Yeah it is a reliable brand. They, like most android brands, give 2 years of support and then another additional year for security updates(and will most likely have a wide community of custom roms). Just keep in mind that some people might not like their android skin and it has a 60Hz screen. You can look into the regular k30 if you particularly like 120hz, but then you will have to deal with that pill shaped camera hole.

Is the skin something you can change on the phone? Or is it like Oxygen OS, whereas it's integrated.

Also I've never owned a phone with punchholes. How troublesome are they? Like if you browse on the internet, can it be annoying that the punchhole covers a part of the browser? Or is this something you get used to and it's not a problem at all? Genuinely curious how a phone deals with punchholes covering part of the screen that has potential content/buttons in the top right or middle (where the punchhole is).

It is like Oxygen OS, but a little on the heavy side. Personally, i prefer pop up cameras, but yeah, you can get used to the waterdrop notches, let alone the punch hole. The punchhole is located in the notification bar, so when browsing it wont get in the way, but when gaming mehh.. still isnt that much of a problem.

Could you elaborate on what actually happens after those 2 years and how it affects your usage of the phone?

It's mostly that the phone doesn't get updated, so it poses security risks.

I assume the first year of using an outdated phone isn't that bad aslong as you're not on dodgy websites, but my Oneplus2 uses android from early 2017, so it feels like i'm using windows XP at this point and I don't feel safe doing bank transactions on this anymore. On top of that my battery life isn't what it used to be.
