Potential Bottleneck

Was just wondering if i would have a big bottleneck with upgrading my current GPU(GTX 980) to a 2080 Super.

 

Current set up

 

i7 4790k @ 3.9 ghz

Asus MAXIMUS VII RANGER MoBo

GTX MSI 980 4GB

DDR3 16GB @ 1600 mhz

PSU Corsair 750W

 

I plan on upgrading the CPU, ram and mobo later in the year but just wondering if my current set up would hold back the 2080 super in a big way.

Also what would be the best make to go for the 2080 super?

Well, you'll definitely see a pretty big performance increase in modern games with a Ryzen 5 3600 since the 4790K, especially at stock, is slower than a 2400G/3400G

Oh i know i would see a definite increase with a new cpu as well, but i was just wondering with my current set up would it bottleneck a 2080 super in a major way.

i'd say that the 4790k is getting on a bit in age, so if you are playing at 1080p i'd say quite probably yes

Yea, i have 2 monitors, currently playing on the 1080p 144hz one, but ive got the 1440p 144hz as my side monitor that i was going to switch to when i did my big upgrade. So switching to the 1440p 144hz as my main gaming monitor would put the load on the gpu and eleviate the bottleneck?

if you plan to play on 1440p. oc your cpu (if you have a stock cooler, buy a little better)

then buy rtx 2080 super (i would wai for new NAVI and rtx -3000 sries at the summer)

 

on 1440p the load is pretty much on gpu and not so much in cpu

you'll still have major trouble reaching 144fps with a 4790K. You want to OC - that's a must. Else you're looking at very poor value out of the 2080S

Are you having problems with it? Only you can decide if the things that you are doing with your hardware are running fine or not.

But you can also see you'll be limited in AC:Odyssey for example. But yeah not surprising for that game I guess. Not sure how much of a difference the slower RAM is gonna be though.

For perspective: I played that game on an i5-3350p and a gtx 970 with 8GB RAM and guess what, it was chugging along at medium settings with 30-50 fps. The game was still fun to play. I also bought a new rig now.  

If you're unhappy just get a new GPU, maybe upgrade the rest later when cyberpunk is out.

You can OC with your hardware so might as well, free performance, I would. But otherwise it's not worth worrying about.

Not getting the frames im wanting out of it tbh! Jeeze that must have been quite a slog haha! Yea think i might just do the GPU right now

That's highly recommended as Haswell i7s had overheating issues under heavy load with the stock cooler

4.5 to 4.7GHz is a reasonable expectation. Just make sure you have a semi decent cooler, you can get one that has an AM4 bracket that can then later be used with your new system.

For 240-280mm AIOs the Corsair, NZXT, and EVGA coolers are good. For mid to high tier coolers the Cooler Master, Noctua, Be Quiet, Cryorig, and DeepCool stuff is pretty good. What is your budget? Also what case do you have?

Budget for cooler? I could probably spend around £150 on it if ill be able to use it again, My current case is NZXT Phantom Full Tower Enthusiast PC Case, Which ill be hoping to keep using with future builds.

I couldn’t use it for any cod games with a decent card. If you’re a 60fps gamer or something that’s not cpu intensive you’ll be fine. 
I got rid of my 4790k while it still had some value.

Enough to effect my game play. I don’t enjoy stutter from a cpu being maxed out ruining the game.
