Hello fellow LTT community,

Needs: Some help on picking new MOBO CPU combo (Ram included).

Current setup:

-i7 4960x

-12 gb ddr3 1600 (1 broken dimm slot)

-ROG Rampage formula IV

-ROG Vega 64

-EVGA G3 750

My usage: I multitask with adobe photo premiere (3 monitors) and play/stream games on the side.

Note: my current cooling setup is twin 360 mm rads in a PC-011 dynamic, running current setup below 60C on full load sustained.

I have my mind leaning towards AMD CPU based setup because of their affordability. The weird thing is that first gen threadrippers (1900x) is cheaper than a second gen 2700x ($280, $400 respectively). This cost if offset by the expensive prices of x399 motherboards (which I get). I think the two would offset each other, making it a matter of preference, reliability, and features.

Pretty open to ideas and would appreciate any input. Budget would be somewhere around $1000-$1300 CAD, I am allotting 150-200 for a higher wattage PSU in case my 750 wont handle a recommended setup.

CPU Recommended: Ryzen 3700x (Most Recommended)

Motherboard Recommended: Asus TUF Gaming X570 Plus

Ram Recommended:

Stay positive, test negative!

For your use case Threadripper, particularly 1st gen which you mentioned, wouldn't really be ideal, as it would underperform badly in gaming (below your 4960X most likely).

Also, you should be fine with your current PSU. A 3700X will most likely end up consuming less than your 4960X.

Thank you for your input. I live the possibility of 12 cores and the most up to date hardware. Would you consider a first gen 1920x (12C/24T) setup comparable to a 3900x?

PSU Recommended (if needed):

750W is plenty and the G3 is a decent PSU, no need to upgrade. For refrence my R7 3800x + 1080Ti + 6 drives + 7 fans only draws 475W MAX from the wall.

As for a upgrade right now in Canada the 3700x would  make the most sense based on pricing, I recommend:

The Asus X570 TUF Gaming Plus is a great motherboard, and has WiFi if you need it. At this point you might as well X570 as well.

32GB of RAM is good, you could also go for 16GB of 3600MHz CL16 RAM.

Not sure if you have storage, if not the HP stuff is good, well priced, and has DRAM cache.

Thank you very much! I find it funny how a 3rd gen 3700x is cheaper than a 2700x. I was worried about the possibility of threadripper gaming, considering all the workstation CPU's are not produced for the purpose of gaming.

it's like 25% slower per core

Really don't need to get a 12 core CPU though, and you might want an X570 board just for the better VRM for the 12 core, though a B450 board with plenty of cooling can handle it.

first gen thread ripper is little worse than 3900x in multitasking and much worse in gaming.

now you can go with thedaily's build with 3700x and no rgb. or with my build with 3900x and rgb ram and rgb motherboard

I mean... Based off my provided picture RGB is not a necessity, but i would go with it if the value and "DAAAAAAMNNNN" factor really made my rig pop.

if you can afford that 16 core beast it would last you for years.

I think in terms of my workload, a 16 core CPU might be alittle overkill. I can appreciate how AMD prices their products very, very reasonably though.
