It doesn't usually take half my RAM though. How do I stop it from doing that.

You can disable your windows firewall and windows defender antivirus, but it probably won't solve it because microsoft has determined us mortal fools cannot handle such power as an unprotected device and will keep working the same as usual.

How much RAM do you have? I know that in every on demand antivirus scan, it’ll increase CPU utilization and disk read but I have never heard of antivirus programs jacking up memory usage during an on demand scan, much less during idle.

yeah everything I look at says CPU and disk utilization. I have 32GB and it's using 16. It wouldn't really be a problem but it seems to lag my games etc.

How long has it been like this? Because just two days ago, Microsoft released a botched security intelligence update that crippled Windows Defender Antivirus. I’m not sure if it’s related to that.

For the meantime you can do trial and error with other antivirus programs https://www.av-comparatives.org/tests/real-world-protection-test-feb-mar-2020-factsheet/

No problem. Should you use Windows Defender, you can try to limit its CPU utilization by opening the Group Policy Editor>Computer Configuration>Administrative Templates>Windows Components>Windows Defender Antivirus>Scan>Specify the maximum percentage of CPU utilization during a scan

However, you can only edit the Group Policy with Windows 10 Pro. If you’re using W10 Home, then you’re stuck with high CPU usage. Maybe @GoodBytes can help.

Yeah CPU isn't the problem, it's only RAM that's having issues.
