Hi All,

I want to implement a PoE managed switch in my home network. I have a older gigabit PoE switch that looks like it will handle my needs. The switch is Dlink DGS-1224T.

So my question is do I still need a router and firewall with this switch? If i still need a router and firewall would I be able to use my Netgear R6260 as a firewall/router and have the manage switch handle DHCP?

What is your current setup?

Why do you need POE?

Yes you still need a router to access your internet modem unless you have a modem/router combo.

🤔 From my layman's understanding, unless the switch itself is a layer 3 switch, meaning a switch that can filter and transfer I.P packets, then you'll still need an actual router. From what I can see on the website, your switch can only transfer frames, which means it is strictly a layer 2 switch. I don't see anything about it managing I.P traffic so.

Current setup is Modem to Netgear R6260 to non managed switch. I want the managed PoE switch because I will be setting up PoE security cams.

Makes sense, just wanted to ask because I have had some think that PoE was a security feature.... Lol.

But yeah your still going to want a router or modem/router combo for your internet access unless you plan to keep those security cam on a separate network with no internet access.

Yes.

Connect your managed and unmanaged switches to the LAN ports of the Netgear router, but allow the router to handle DHCP.

I'd advise that you establish a static IP range and DHCP range for your network subnet. In the Netgear router's web interface, set the DHCP range from 192.168.1.50 - 192.168.1.254 (or whatever internal IP system you use). That way, you can assign your smart switch a static IP (and any other hardwired device on your network) between 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.49 that won't be interfered when IP leases need renewal. The unmanaged switch doesn't need a static IP because it acts like an invisible node on the network. Also, if your smart switch has other setup fields to allow for the upstream router to handle routing/DHCP, enable that as well.

On another-but-related note, make sure that your PoE switch can handle the power output needed for your PoE cameras.

I'm now convinced that the world is over. I don't think i've ever seen 4 people in the same thread think that Path of Exile is a network switch.
