Time to upgrade! Or not?

hiimnino

Hey Folks!

So im a Hobby-Videographer and currently im into gaming and streaming. But it seems im lacking overall performance to do that.

I've build this PC in mid 2018:

CPU: Ryzen 5 2600

Board: MSI B450 Tomahawk (not max)

RAM: 16GB G.Skill Aegis DDR4-3000 CL16

CPU-Cooler: be quiet! Pure Rock

PSU: 400 Watt be quiet! Pure Power 10

Graphic: 4GB Asus RX 570 ROG Strix

SSD: Several Samsung Evo SSDs since i need them for Videowork

Monitor: Lenovo y27f - 1080p, 144hz

Im not the typical high-end, everything-on-ultra type of gamer and I dont mind medium-high settings.

And now im looking for the right parts to upgrade my system for streaming and better performance for videowork... and holy hell, it is frustrating. I thought about picking following upgrades:

  • Ryzen 9 3900x
  • Trident Z Royal (3600 CL16) and
  • a new Nvidia 2060/1660Ti Graphics Card (dont know which one)
  • (and I guess a new PSU, since 400 Watts seem a tad underpowered)

Unfortunately, my b450 Tomahawk barely supports the Ryzen 9 and can't run 3600mhz RAM.

But now im stuck with my CPU and RAM choice. Is it even worth upgrading to an Ryzen 7 3700x compared to the R5 2600? If yes: What kind of RAM do I need to run, in order to maximize performance (thinking of infnity fabric here)?

Or am I stuck with "get a new Motherboard, RAM, CPU, Graphics card" - which kinda means "buy a new PC"?

Hopefully anyone of you guys could help me out here!

Stay home, stay safe and stay healthy!

I'd say first start with a gpu upgrade and psu upgrade. Nvidia's nvenc decoder is really nice for streaming and that will fix your streaming issue. As for videowork depends on the software. The gpu upgrade may help there too. Your current ram speed is fine so I don't see why you would want to upgrade as a move from 3000 to 3600 is a minimal performance gain

i would get a 3700x, keep the current ram and motherboard and get a more powerful gpu, if what you care about is gaming, maybe a 2060 super or 2070 super.

buy atleast A- categoru psu a good 550w unit will be plenty:

And save the money for better gpu (keep your cpu ram and motherboard, they are decent). Save for 3rd gen rtx or new navi.

if you want to upgrade now a rtx 2080 super will give a nice performance boost. But still try to wait to end of this year and then upgrade the nvidia 3rd gen

i agree to everyone. why should you upgrade a 2. gen ryzen is it important to you that the render is finniseh in 2/3 the time or have you time to wait these extra minutes. what  is the cpu usage while streaming is it 100%? then upgrade if not, you won't get more performance there, for a 3. gen. if you want to do a upgrade at all cost wait for 4. gen.

i would make a gpu upgrade if necesary.

sorry for grammar

Thank ya'll for your helpful feedback!! Really appreciate that!

As I mentioned, I don't really care about Ultra-settings and 4k Gaming - I think a 2080 super would be a bit of overkill. What I do agree on is the NVENC decoding for streaming, which will probably help out a lot as my RX570 is reaching its limits even when not streaming.

Just to summarize everything:

- GPU upgrade is recommended - I think a RTX 2060 should fit my needs, right? Is there one i should prefer when looking for one?

- Board/CPU/RAM no upgrade now - or if I really need a performance boost, the 3700x

- PSU Upgrade 500w A-

Is there anything else im missing?

Thanks again for the fast help!

would go for the super version because then pathtraicing starts to get powerfull enough and it is not so more expensive.
