The fans on my MSI prestige go from 0-100, and it still gets really hot.

Hey All,

This is my first post on the forum, so hopefully this is the right place for this post. 

I have an MSI Prestige P65 Creator https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07TN4C5VZ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

with a 9750H and an RTX 2060. The fan will boost up to 100% just from plugging it in and having chrome open, which can be kind of annoying in class, but at the same time it still gets super when I'm using it for gaming/heavy creative work so I'm worried adjusting the fan curve would cause overheating problems. Would adjusting the fan curve and or undervolting be a possible solution given my hardware? It runs everything super smoothly even in 4k, but I usually turn settings down to 1080p just so it doesn't get as hot. I'd like this machine to last for a long time, so longevity of the hardware is kind of my priority. 

 

A little background - I have never adjusted a fan curve or undervolted so I'm a total noob, but I think I understand the basic principles? And I have a desktop I built at home so any serious work can get done on that machine, meaning I'm willing to take a bit of a performance hit if it makes the machine cooler and quieter. Especially given that I'm pretty sure my monitor is only 60Hz.

I would see what your temps are like before exploring the option of possibly adjusting your fan curve or undervolting. Use HardwareMonitor to record a session and see what your temps get up to, for longevity purposes undervolting probably isn't a bad idea as it will decrease temps and battery load.

Cooling in this laptop isn't that great, hot is unavoidable

 

Consider repaste, undervolt and lift the laptop with something like a book (or stand)

How involved/risky of a process is undervolting? Worst case scenario it only boots into bios?

Download MSI Afterburner and undervolt it,

Perhaps look up a tear-down to see how easy it'd be to replace the stock paste. Some decent paste will always improve a laptops thermals

Not dangerous at all. If it goes unstable you just reboot the system. It's overvolting that's risky.

Undervolting is still operating within spec, because voltages drop automatically when idle to preserve power

Do you know of a place to find a range of voltages for this cpu? or should i just youtube it

For a laptop that's about normal for idle, you likely hit high 90's to 100's under load and then begin thermal throttling, record a session next time and see what happens when you actually use the system.

Those are actually really decent temps OP. My old MSI GS63VR also sounded like a wind tunnel, these thin and lights gotta move that heat somewhere, so fans spinning like crazy it is.

good to know! When i played a game in 4k I hit 98c on my cpu and 94c on my graphics card, so I'll probably cool it on the 4k gaming, and do some research into undervolting etc.

Yeah likely thermal throttling for sure, TBH this is to be expected with a thin laptop and the high end hardware it has. It is no different with other high-end thin and late gaming laptops. The Razer laptops are literally known for the "Razer wine" because of how loud then get when under load, so don't worry this isn't uncommon. I think that the best approach for now may be looking into advanced power settings, if there are additional options that limit GPU/CPU performance to enhance battery life this will also greatly impact thermal output. Might be an easier approach to consider and make more sense. This also means you can switch the performance mode when using the laptop at school versus plugged in and gaming at home.
