damage because of wrong power plug

My Massdrop cth just got delivered, but I dont have the power adapter yet. I still got an adapter with these specs laying around though:

  • Input Voltage (US)110-120VAC
  • Input Voltage (EU/UK/AU)220-240VAC
  • Output Voltage, 0 mA~16.2VAC
  • Output Voltage, 500 mA~15VAC
  • Output Current 500mA

This is what I need:

  • Power consumption: Maximum 35W (28V, 1.25A), ~9W idle

WIll my amp be damaged if I use the adapter i currently have? is it worth a try or definetely a failure?

You can't even come close to the operating voltage it needs so it's not gonna do much if you plug it in. Best to just wait.

but if its below the needed specs that means I cant damage it either, right?

Usually not but it's not gonna turn on or if it does it's not gonna be able to do much till the adapter runs into it's limits. So just be patient till you have the adapter instead of potentially risking something because of overloading an adapter.

If you try to pull way more out of an adapter then it's made for you may risk a fire and/or melting parts of the adapter, depends on the quality and safety measures build into it. Don't try it, please.

15v x 500mA = 7.5w

28v x 1.25A = 35w

7.5 =/= 35

Also, the voltages have to be the same for an amp to work. So it either wouldn't even turn on, or it will run in a sag mode and sound terrible.

It's also a Tube amp (Which explains the near 30v it needs), so undervolting it will most likely sound like absolute shite and may even blow out headphone drivers without the proper voltage (YT search dying guitar tube amp to see what I mean).

TL;DR, no. Use the included power adapter (I'd be STUNNED if Drop didn't include one.)

It should have power adapter with it. You shouldn't need to buy one. If you bought it from Drop and it didn't contact them.

from the drop page:

INCLUDED
  • 6922 dual-triode vacuum tube
  • Cloth storage bag
  • Switching power supply that handles 100–240 VAC (add plug adapter for your country’s outlet)
  • 1-year warranty

The pictures on the drop page clearly show a DC In connector and the text 28v / 1.25A under it.

My guess is that it would probably work with a 24v power supply with a barrel jack connector of same ID and OD (inner, outer diameter), maybe it would even work with 19v laptop adapter but I'm reluctant to suggest anything less.

The voltage may be so high because there's a dc-dc converter inside or some boost circuit which produces the hundreds of volts required by the tubes to operate, so if the input voltage is too low, that circuit could overheat, or oscillate or cause problems making the amplifier behave incorrectly.

No, don't use whatever you have there because I'm not even sure those are DC power supplies. If you shove AC voltage into your device you may kill it.

If that's 15v AC 0.5A (500mA) you could add a bridge rectifier to convert the 15v to ~20v DC  (sqrt(2) x 15v - 2 x voltage drop on internal diodes of rectifier, about 0.6-1v each) and a capacitor to smooth out the output DC voltage.

Since you ask the question, you're probably too much of a noob so better not do it.
