Gigabyte gtx 970 ITX without pci-e cables?

lightfire

Hello,

I'm currently building a dell optiplex 9020MT and I have a Gigabyte GTX 970 ITX as a gpu. This gpu has an 8-pin connector.

I do have a new power supply that has such a connector, however I can't use this power supply because I'm waiting on the 24-pin to 8-pin converter cable from Moddiy (for the motherboard). Meaning that I'm stuck with the stock 290W power supply for now.

Would it be possible to run the GTX 970 without the pci-e cables? (at lower performance?) Or is it worth a try?

My main concern is, is it dangerous for the card to be under-powered and can it get damaged?

The system won't boot? Or the gpu won't work?

GPU won't start.

Whether the rest of the system ignores it and boots anyway depends on your BIOS etc, but in any case you won't get anything out of that GPU.

both. you will likely see a screen telling you to attach the power cable to the gpu and try booting again.

aha, would it be dangerous to try? Could it harm the card?

No but trying is pointless since it just won't work...

You are gonna use the 24 pin to 8 pin to then plug into the GPU?

Thats likely to burn, as the 24 pin has 2 12v pins. Instead of the 3 on the 6-pin PCIe.

Edit: if the board can deliver its full power, then its borderline in terms of rated spec.

No, he's got a Dell mobo with a proprietary 8-pin connector that needs an adapter if you want to power it with an ATX PSU.

Ah, he means to the mobo. That makes more sense.

I thought the proprietary connector was a 10/14-pin, tho i might have looked at a different board.

Yea, the motherboard requires an 8-pin connector. So until I have that converter, I can't use my new psu.

you can try it but all that is going to happen is whatever parts are plugged in right now are going to get power and 290w is not enough power anything let alone the GPU and motherboard. so just wait on the cables you need

why not try reading the first post before replying to my comments? op asked if not having the GPU plugged in will allow it to run or not. I just gave more detail than you did as to why it will not.

The detail you gave is incorrect. "290W is not enough power" doesn't matter since the GPU won't pull any power in the first place.

I beg to differ, either that or my asus strix gtx970 is special because mine will boot up and display without any pci power cables connected. It will only display in 800x600 but it still works
