Hello

The fan on my GPU has been making quite a lot of noise with no apparent reason. I have already checked it for dust, formatted windows, what else could it be?

I am using a GTX 1060 6GB

- bad thermal paste (or just dried up paste)

- airflow in your case that is not great

- fan curve that is too aggressive (check your temps)

The airflow is pretty good.

You will be able to see the temps and change the fan curve in Windows.

Download MSI Afterburner and you can see the temps and change the fan curve. Check temps first. At 100% load, is it super loud but temps are under say 70 degrees C? You can lower the fan speeds in that case

Also, this might help:

These two really don't help.

Just put a 100% load on your videocard (e.g. by playing a game), look at the temperature of your videocard. If it's below 70 C, you can make the fan curve less aggressive.

You can change the fan curve in the main page of Afterburner on teh bottom you have fan speed (%) and just press user define

As said, those don't help in this case. You need stabile load. I would recommend running Unigine Heaven or something like that where the load is constant and maybe bit over what you normally see. That should be your baseline for highest fan speed you ever want to hear. Next let it cool down and find the lowest fan speed where playing YT video doesn't really cause it to ramp up etc. Then adjust curve in between so that it ramps faster when card gets hotter. You can see mine as example. This is for 780Ti Founders Edition:
