but for the cost I could go buy a supermicro sever with a similar case and just toss the the guts.

Some aren't a proprietary form factor? Most I see on eBay aren't standard.

intel 710. 520, 530, 540 545. are all common SSDs that for smaller sizes should be cheaper than new

Built to last I can tell ya that. There's cheaper ones though and as GDRRiley seems to be more in the know than I am you can repurpose some old supermicro enclosures for cheaper.

I'm talking about motherboards. Standard form factor form motherboards vs most of the Supermicro chassis I see using proprietary form factor motherboards.

 

Transplanting a standard motherboard into a supermicro chassis. I don't know why you've suddenly switched to talking about SSDs.

Most of the ones I see are very obscure in shape. At least the ones from eBay but if you've had better luck finding standard ones then more power to spending less for a high end server enclosure.

 

Next problem I would have is if the chassis uses a direct pass-though backplane or a built in sas expander backplane. This doesn't always work for all applications.
