Game/Other hosting server

Currently looking to build a server and would like it to rack mountable. I have a 42U rack thats just sitting here not really doing anything. Might as well put it to use. 

 

The server will used for game hosting and probably other things. I will more than likely be running ESXI. 

 

What would you guys suggest for parts? I would atleast want DDR4 64GB ECC and would like to be in rack mountable case, maybe a 4U case.

With that much DDR4 I'd look into at least single socket LGA2011-V3. Probably an 8 core or higher Xeon.

what games and how many and what else do you plan to do?

 

I'm tempted now to say go grab a couple of dell, hp, super micro or lenovo servers and upgrade them.

That's LGA2011 the LGA2011v3 predecessor.

 

Still a nice DDR3 platform CPU for virtualization. So long as you get one with a stepping of C2 or higher.

Minecraft (survival and FTB), Ark, GTA V FiveM, Empyrion, etc. I was about to buy a bunch of dell poweredge 2650s but a friend of mine told me to just build my own but that is why I came to this forum, to get better advice.

Ah ok. I would probably want to do newer hardware just for future proofing. Goes to show that I do not know a whole lot about these processors.

dell r730 r530, hp dl360 or 380 g9 are also haswell.

those will do better with games like Minecraft than a r710 or dl380 g6

I find a lot of these but just chassis. The other ones I find are over ~$1200.

I shall do that. The only issue I seem to have is trying to find a case. I see a lot of chassis out there but do you have to have certain motherboards that fit the case?

I see some that go up to 2.6GHz but nothing hire unless I go to different model.

okay looking at what CPUs are supported for this gen the mid core count high frequency chips are expensive.

the 510, 610 and 710 are all super common. I've got a similar HP box that I hate so go with a dell.

the issues is to get near the fastest 6 core your going to be at the same speed as the newer boxes with more cores.

If you're going rack mount Newegg has a whole section on server chassis that support standard form-factors (Mini-ITX, Micro-ATX, ATX, E-ATX, SSI-EEB)
