So first off, I have an ASUS 144hz monitor, a BENQ 60hz monitor and an old vizio TV as my third. One of my buddies said that he heard having such an old TV hooked up to my PC can have a negative effect on the computers performance, or at least your 144hz monitors performance. Is there any truth to that or is that wrong.

If you're not doing anything on that TV (e.g. not running a YouTube video on it), it will not have an adverse effect.

The only thing I could mention is that usually your videocard temperatures go up a tiny bit by having multiple monitors, but that's minimal.

Well it won't influence the performance of the monitor, but will rather influence the performance of the game.

Now instead of the game getting the full attention of the videocard, now it has to share the videocard power with a YouTube video playing

So is there a difference if it plays it on my BENQ monitor? Compared to my old TV?

Extremely negligible. Youtube content and other multimedia is pre-rendered which is extremely easy for most graphics cards. You'd probably see less than a 5% decrease in fps.

It should be noted however, that your Vizio TV shouldn't be used to play games. TVs add a lot of post processing which will cause several frames of delay between when your GPU sends the picture to when the TV actually displays it.

Right, I mainly have discord and other things that are not videos or games. I am just curious if using the monitor at all impacts other things since it isn't a computer monitor.

No, outside of the TV itself (not your computer) being natively more laggy there should be no issue. GPUs can perform multiple functions with 3D being by far 10-100x far harder than anything else.

3D/Copy = Gaming

Encode = Converting a video into a file

Decode = Converting a file (or url) into a video

Just want to chime in:

As someone with four monitors who regularly watches full screen YouTube vids while playing games, it can have a very small impact on your gaming performance. But it's not something you'll notice unless you have aging hardware - or are a total snob. Even if you have a nice monitor paired with not so nice TV. Your friend simply over exaggerated any ill-affects of your current setup - which is fine.

Yeah. I bought my 1080 on release, and I have a newer board and ryzer CPU. I feel my GPU is losing more and more performance. Can't wait to get a new one.
