Hey everyone,

I recently bought this rack-mountable patch panel / network switch from Amazon-UK and I'm a bit confused on how to wire it up because I thought it was going to be similar to My other Network switch that I have lying on My desk currently but it's completely different and like I said before, I'm confused. VERY Confused :/.

A) Do I need to provide power? Assuming Yes, lol, but I cannot see how You're meant to provide power because this patch panel had come with no plug/power-source when it arrived. There's a earth-wire with a circle-shaped metal hook (Sort of) which I assume You attach directly onto the rack-mount case, maybe? If so, how?

B) From what I can tell, the wire that comes from My router needs to be opened up and each of the colours needs to be "punched down" into the patch panel with a "LSA Insertion Tool" in Port #1 so I can then have access to Ports #2-#24? Is that how it works?

C) Ports #1-#8 are on one PCB and so are Ports #9-#16 and Ports #17-#24. Can I "bridge" the PCBs together for Ethernet-access and power? If so, how??

Really need some help and advice!

Thanks!

A) No

B) Yep. Typically following the T568-B color order. The jacks should have color code stickers to show you which ones go where.

C) All 24 jacks are meant to operate independently. This is not a network switch where one port can act as an uplink to 23 other clients. This is typically used in a server rack to be ran through a building to wall jacks which then have short cables to computers. These 24 ports then typically connect to 24 ports on a network Switch, a Server, a Router, or other network equipment.

A) no power required.

B) yup, you'll need a punchdown tool and the cables will need to be stripped and manually installed (that's the fun part! lol)

C) No, those aren't meant to talk with each other, it's only a "patch panel", where you connect your wires from the back, and then connect the switch to the ports needed on the panel.

No as in.. I don't need to provide power? Really? That's surprising to Me, lol. Ok then!

And I only need to do that for Port #1, right? For the cable that comes from My Router? or..?

Ohhhhhh.... RIP. I might have to return this then >_<

So I cannot, repeat CANNOT, shove the cable from the router into Port #1 and have access to the rest of the ports for other devices?

Correct?

Is there any 19" rack-mount ones that can let Me shove the cable from the router into Port #1 and have access to the rest of the ports for other devices?

If so, Link / Item name please? ?

nope, you'll need to wire 24 cables if you want to use all 24 ports, that's not a switch! ;)

Do 19" Rack-mountable switches exist??; Where I can as mentioned, insert the cable from the router into Port #1 and have access to the rest of the ports for other devices?

Sorry, I legit have no Networking knowledge lmao xD

Non-POE:

POE = Power Over Ethernet, means it will power devices that require extra electrical or independent electric source such as cameras and such without needing to wire and electrical outlet.

I have a feeling you will not need the POE.

Yep, each jack are just eight strait lines of metal. There are no micro-controllers or processors to power. Personally there are easier patch panels to work with. Ones that use keystone jacks and ones that accept RJ-45 connects on both sides which are good for long term maintenance but you already bought the equipment so...

You need to do it for all the ports you plan to connect. If you wanted a Network Switch so you can connect many devices to a single uplink cable you should have purchased a Switch not a Patch Panel.

Yep. Nope. You want a Network Switch for that application. Ubiquiti has some nice ones if you need 24 ports. eBay has a lot of really cheap ones ($20~30) if you're on a budget.

@Windows7ge @wkdpaul @SansVarnic, Ok so I've been looking around at some unmanaged switches and at the ones that SansVermic very kindly linked above (Thanks btw) and luckily, I found one sold by My local Amazon here in the UK (Amazon-UK), however, because I'm a complete noob as You can probably tell by now... xD Lmao, I just wanna be 100% sure on a couple of things before I order this 24-Port Linksys switch and return the one I have atm:

I am able to put the cable as it is, coming from My router, into Port-#1 and have access/hook-up other devices like PCs/Consoles/etc..... in Ports #2-#24..?

Correct?

And that is a 19" compatible Rackmount..? I need it to be 19".

Correct?

Sorry for all the questions, I just wanna be 100% sure as mentioned :3 :$

yes, that type of switch is exactly what you need for that type of use (plug your router in one port and the rest of the devices in other ports).

Yes, it's rackmountable, 19 inches is the standard and the data sheet says it's a rack mount unit ;

@Windows7ge @wkdpaul @SansVarnic Hey, quick question? ^_^

So umm, I thought Windows7ge was kidding when He said "eBay" + "($20~$30)" but I was very wrong lmao ? ..and that goes to show how crap My Networking-Knowledge is ? Anyways moving on, I found the same model as the one in My previous comment above Paul's but this one has "Cisco" in the title and it has a lower price which is pretty nice.

Link: here.

So, this is still the right model, correct? Just wanna be sure because I've heard Cisco a lot but I have no idea about them, lmao. Are they a part of Linksys or something? I am still able to put the cable as it is, coming from My router, into Port-#1 and have access/hook-up other devices like PCs/Consoles/etc..... in Ports #2-#24..? Correct?

Cisco used to own Linksys back in the mid to late 2000's before selling it off when they found the consumer market to not be profitable. Cisco is the largest manufacturer of enterprise networking gear in the world, not to be confused with Sysco (pronounced the same way) the food delivery company :P

It's an unmanaged switch so it's just plug and play which is what you want :)

That's good to know! Thanks! ❤️

Normally brand new and latest model some of these switches can cost $1,000's or 10's of $1,000's of dollars but once they're a couple generations old and find their way on eBay some of them can be scooped up for stupid cheap. Like fully managed 48 port gigabit switches <$40.

And yep. Plug'n'play. As Lurick explained CISCO is huge in the networking enterprise space. They make some great (really expensive too) networking gear that you can scoop up for really cheap on eBay.
