I7 8700k still worth it?

Hey guys,

im 11 years old and want to get into pc building. I started out upgrading prebuilt dell and hp system’s but you can’t get much out of them.

since I live in Canada I’m on Kijiji and I find a i7 8700k and a Z370 ASUS rog strix motherboard for $400. I can probably get it for a bit lower but the one question is are they still worth it? i7 8700k new on amazon is $560 and mb is $300

Depends on expectations vs Price.
Plenty of people still use the 2600K 4C8T overclocked to the nethers and say its fine for them.

 

Worth it for a 2080ti paired with the 8700K OC a little less than newer CPU's, many still have this combo, it might lose to a 9900K OC at 1080p, but at 1440p where you'd be actually using on a 2080ti, it's quite close and super feasible.

Only at 1080p do you need that sweet sweet IPC for FAST GPUs.
Anything under a 1070/1660S/2060 is going to be fine on such a CPU as the 8700K

Even at 1080p with a 2080ti, with equal clocks there's really negligible difference between the 8700k and 9700k

Yea I guess so the 8700k has 6c but not sure how many threads and has great performance . Was looking at a 1050 ti would the  gpu be a bottleneck?

8700k is 6/12.

 

1050ti would absolutely be a bad choice with either of these CPUs.

 

8700k/9700k is a 2060 super/1080p 144 minimum

The 1050Ti is your limiting factor yes.
In regards to it'll fall short way before the CPU will.

would a rx 580 be good for a system like this

no. if you are considering spending so little on a GPU you should be spending less on a cpu and more on the gpu.

 

drop down to a 3600x for 269CA and its a much better value, then spend more on a more competent GPU like a 5600xt or someth ing

Seriously, I'm an AMD guy, but at that price, it looks like it's a great deal, so I'd go for it. The 8700K is 6C/12T so it should be fine more even future games.....just be aware that when it comes to upgrades, you're pretty much stuck.

 

Edit - IF you can get a 3600X/3600 + B450 mobo for about the same price, then go with this as a 3600X is still faster than the 8700K.

Eh..not really.

 

The 8700k at 5hz will generally best the 3600x at everything.

 

The 2+ year old 8700k is just not compelling price wise anymore compared to the 3600/x which is almost as good but much cheaper.

Well, the 8700K + RoG Strix Z370 mobo he can find for 400CAD is cheap, even a used combo like this can't be found in my neck of the woods. IF I can find one for this price, I'd replace them with my i7 3960X (not worried about RAM as I have spare DDR4 RAM).

 

Just checked, an MSI B450 Mortar MAX + R5 3600 would cost about 40'ish CAD more in my neck of the woods. But yes, as I'd added, if you can find a B450 mobo + AMD R5 3600/3600X for about the same (or even less), by all means, get these instead.

I was looking at the 3770k and 2600k and found out that 4c/8t is enough because my daily driver right now is a i5 4570 8gb ddr3 with a gt 1030.

i was asking because I thought it was a really good deal. I might switch to amd just because of the price. I wasn’t looking to buy new parts the 8700k and mobo were both used on classifieds. How much would a R5 1st gen cost and also doesn’t the i7 3960X have a different socket other that 1151. Plus I don’t really know how to overclock so yea... would a B450M and R7 2600 for 2 cad a good deal?

Id buy it for that price, nice deal.   Good CPU, will hold up for some time longer as well.  Of note, if you go for a cheap GPU and expensive CPU, you are going to be disappointed.  The CPU wont do anything for you if you dont have GPU horsepower (2070S/5700XT would be a better match for that CPU).  You will have a very nice CPU/mobo combo and slow FPS in games.  Your cinebench scores will be really good while you have to play on low settings 1080p on any AAA title; a bad time.

 

That said, its a very nice platform to upgrade the GPU later when you have more money if that is what youre planning.  

 

I would honestly look for a great deal on a ryzen 2600 + mobo or 3600 + mobo.  A 2600+ mobo can be had for around 200 bucks depending on the deal and mobo.  Thats 200 more you could put toward a GPU which will give you a much better time.  A 1050ti could run fine on an Athlon 3000 (or whatever cheap CPU you could possibly find for the most part).  An 8700k is not a good match for it (even though that deal is awesome!).  A 1050ti runs around 150$ on the cheaper end, I would add that to the 200 saved then we are entering 5700/XT/2060S territory (which will run wonderfully on a ryzen 2600).  You will have a much better time gaming and a well matched all around system.

As an aside and something to consider:

 

My first foray into PC building was an upgrade to a prebuilt.  It can potentially transform a dated system and save you money.

 

My old prebuilt - Hard drive only, 2 generations old GPU, OK CPU, stock CPU fan that was LOUD

Very easy upgrades: Added 500 gb SSD boot/game drive, sold old GPU and bought current gen GPU, kept CPU but added hyper 212 evo cooler.  Overall was cheap compared to building from ground up and gave me 2 more years on that box!  The SSD and GPU made it feel like an entire new system and the cooler made it actually tolerable to sit next to.

 

Just food for thought!

The 2600 would still be a limiting factor down the road, if he wants to keep the computer for more than a couple of years, no? Not worth it imo. 3600 + mobo would be great obviously, but if he has a deal for 8700k + mobo for 400 then that would be better I think. 8700k is faster than 3600 and will easily last atleast 5 years. One thing, are you going to build the computer by yourself? That can be a bit tricky, you should take that into consideration. Better watch a few tutorials on how to build a computer if that's the case.

That's roughly $150 USD. I think it's a great deal. People like the MSI B450 Tomahawk. I have a Gigabyte B450 Aorus M. It's okay.

 

A good GPU choice for that would be a 2060 KO, 5600 XT, or 5700.

The answer to that is maybe, possibly.  I am with you, I love that 8700k deal and I would do it myself.  But if he runs out of money and has to pair it with a 1050ti then the CPU performance isnt really going to do much.  As I was saying, if he just wants a nice base to start with and will upgrade GPU in the future, I can get on board with that.  

 

I think the 2600 will still be OK for a little while, but it really depends how much this next gen of consoles leverages 8 cores and if they really use them.  My i5 3350P, despite being an uninspired mid range CPU, held up for a very long time.  Granted we are in a different time with cores rapidly being added, but even with that, my 8 core 16 thread CPU is never even close to being fully used, most cores barely make it to 50% utilization, and 1-2 cores do a lot of the heavy lifting.  I personally would be fine buying a 2600 knowing I can get more GPU buying power in a limited money scenario, but you are right it COULD be a limiting factor depending on how soon games actually utilize more CPU.

I am not really trying to do any intensive gaming but I think I’ll go with the ryzen 5 2600 just because they have integrated graphics and I might wait to get a good deal on a gpu. What is the preferred motherboard for the R5 2600 just in case I can’t find any MB’s with it. The preferred gpu with the R7 2700x is like higher than the 1660 ti and higher I only looking to spend $400 to $450 CAD.

Is that just for the GPU or for the full PC?
