Hi everyone!

So i've had my computer running for the past 5 years without a hitch. But lately there are some issues.

1. Im running out of space. I use 2 x 120gb SSDs in RAID 0 for local drive and 3 x 2TB drives for storage and backup.

2. Games no longer run in ultra. Running EVGA GTX 970 SC

3. There's a weird ticking sound when the computer starts up. Im thinking its the fans used in the CPU cooler, its a Corsair H110i.

I recently went to the states to buy the upgrades but i just want to be sure it will work out and the upgrade process goes smoothly.

Bought:

- 2 x 6TB drives

- 1 x MSI Armor Radeon RX580

- 1x Noctua NH-D15 Chromax.black

So about the process:

- For the drives i know its just a copy paste. But, i was wondering if i should do a drive sanity check or something similar?

- For the video card, its nothing. Plug, update and play.

- The CPU cooler is where im kinda lost. I know i need to clean up the old thermal paste and re apply more. But should i worry about the RAID? About the other components? What should i prepare for?

I hope you at least get the 8GB version, because RX 580 is not meaningfully faster than the GTX 980 (so yes, faster than 970 but not much). Even with 8GB it's still not an upgrade I would recommend... Because the MSI Armor's cooler is weak, expect more noise than the 970 SC as well

swapping CPU cooler won't affect anything else like RAID and stuff... all you need is DDU to get rid of the Nvidia graphics drivers and install AMD ones.

There are a bunch of videos on how to correctly install the cooler.  It’s not impossible that you might have trouble with memory height, but it usually involves the second fan which you may not find any use from so you might be able to do without it.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

It is 8GB, i know its not the dream upgrade, but i was money short. What i really aimed for was the storage and the cooler.

Is there a way to check this before installation?

DDU is a shareware app.  It’s a way to completely remove GPU drivers without doing a compete OS reinstall.  It’s kind of annoying to download.  The website is covered in adware.  It has a lot of requirements to run correctly including running the thing in safe mode.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Not only is it not "dream" upgrade, but "how about no" upgrade. You'll be back to the same situation within a year or two.

Adequate memory space is more important than cooling
