I heard of him well before that happened lol. It's great that the prefectures in Japan try to one up each other with mascots for their prefectures these days. I do honestly think that thanks to special goods with kumamon on it etc.. and that some of the characters become famous, it actually does bring in quite a bit of tourism money. Now we just need to wait for the US to start making kawaii characters for each of their states.

Sadly I doubt the US would do anything like that since the mind mentally is more on the were "tough" side
