Hey guys!
I'm looking to upgrade my rig from an i5 6600k, and want some suggestions! My cpu currently pegs in some games, and it's causing me to crash a lot. I have an RTX 2060, so i know im good on the GPU front. My workload is gaming, mixed with a bit of 3D modeling, and some other things like photoshop. I know the modeling with benefit having more cores, along with some games today also utilizing more cores, but I can't decide on what path to upgrade. Any suggestions would be welcome, even if its not one of the ones mentioned in the title, thank you!

What motherboard do you have ?   Your best choice would probably just upgrade the CPU.

In the long run you will save money rather than playing catch up when it comes time upgrading the video card.

CPU i7 4960x Ivy Bridge Extreme | 64GB Quad DDR-3 RAM | MBD Asus x79-Deluxe | RTX 2080 ti FE 11GB |
Thermaltake 850w PWS | ASUS ROG 27" IPS 1440p | | Win 7 pro x64 |

i have an asus rox maximus 8 hero, but from looking at prices and such, wouldn't I be better off getting a 2700x or something new, rather than spending an absurd amount of money on just a cpu instead of a cpu/mobo combo? I'm happy with the GPU, so im just looking to upgrade the CPU

Nevermind, it looks like the max supported i7 it supports is i7-7700K and not a major difference than what you have.

Honestly I'd probably just go with a 1600AF. Not really much point in going up to the 2700x with your workload if it's just light work.

Save the money for AM5.

I'd go for a 3600. It barely falls behind the 2700X in multi-core performance but is much better when it comes to single-core.

Otherwise if you don't mind waiting for Intel or AMD's new offerings but still want an improvement in the meantime, you could look for a used i7-6700/7700, but I wouldn't go that route unless I found a very good deal for either of those two.

Desktop: Intel Core i9-9900K | ASUS Strix Z390-F | G.Skill Trident Z Neo 2x16GB 3200MHz CL14 | EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER XC Ultra | Corsair RM650x | Fractal Design Define R6

Display: Gigabyte G34WQC

Alright ill look into this, biggest thing is I can find a combo for the 2700x and mobo for about $230, whereas the 3600 combo i found is closer to $380

1st gen and 2nd gen Ryzen don't game at high frame rates well though due to their architecture, I'd rather get an R5 3600 (3500X if you can)

You dont have to use X570 boards for 3rd gen, boards like the MSI Max series are pre-flashed and some older boards have BIOS flashback, which means you can update their BIOS on your own to get 3rd gen capability without needing an older CPU

I would wait for AMD's next gen which is coming soon and you don't also have to get the newest of motherboards if you want to save some money on that front. Im running a 3700x on a x470 board and have had minimal issues. Had to wait for a bios update for destiny and OC ram but works like a charm now.

Thanks guys! I'll look into this and see what I can come up with, what mobo suggestions would you suggest, other than the one already mentioned

Well I'm running a Asus X470 prime pro and i can't complain but it doesnt come with wireless or bluetooth if you want that sort of thing inbuilt.  Dunno how much it would cost where you live but it cost me around 220 AUD
