Hi guys,

I was wondering about what server I should buy. I mean, I do not want SERVER (hpe, dell, etc.), but I want PC that would run like server built-in 1U case.

I want something that will power mainly the Minecraft Servers, Webs, Discord Bots, and more things.

The question is: What to put into it?

Was looking for Ryzen 3950X or intel i9 9900KS
I also want at least 32GB of memory
1TB SSD (maybe RAID 0??)
and some MB

Can you guys help me with the parts, which should I choose?

Thanks!

Do you already have a server rack where your 1u server will be put in? Because of youre going with consumer hardware instead of server grade hardware it may be easier to just get a atx tower... For example: youll need to find a compatible 1u aircooler and a 1u server psu since an atx psu wont fit.

Overall it seems a bit overkill, minecraft is probably the most demanding task and i used to have a minecraft server on a single core athlon 2600+ with 1GB DDR1 and a laptop harddrive as storage so it really depends on much players en addons you add...

For starters if you have the budget I'd recommend using server parts like motherboards with IPMI functionality (ASRock Rack, Supermicro have such boards) it's an invaluable management tool even for a home DIYer. A Xeon processor, ECC memory (not a real requirement but nice to have).

Understand in a 1U enclosure this server won't be quiet. 1Us use the noisiest high pitch wine fans. You can make a server a lot quieter stepping up to 2U.

I have a server room. Noise doesnt metter that much.

I do not rlly want to go for Xeons and ECCs because, in my budget, they are way more expensive and with lower single thread performance - like the HPE gen10 start at 1,000$ with the basic Xeon Bronze, 8GB ECC and some HDD.

I have one PSU which left me from my past build (Seasonic PRIME GOLD 1300W) so want to use it.

Look at the used market. 16C/32T Xeons for $500. I would see single thread performance hurting Minecraft but other games should utilize more than one thread/core. Only problem I see is I don't know of a 1U cooler for the AM4 socket and trying to cool a 9900KS with a 1U cooler either it's going to run toasty under load or those are going to be some seriously strong fans.

That psu probably won't fit in a 1u.

Its a pain to get a diy 1u, and most atx boards just aren't made for the form factor, so things like ram blocks the airflow.

Id get a used dell server, you can get the high clocked chips, look at a r630 generation server.

If you want it to be a rackmountable server, and be able to fit your Seasonic power supply, you're looking at a 4U rackmount chassis. (My suggestion would be pretty much any of the Chenbro or Supermicro 4U chassis would be what I would pick, if I were you).

And then, because you're going to be running 4U chassis, you can pretty much put anything that will fit within your budget.

Your suggestions of running an AMD Ryzen 9 3950X, 32 GB of RAM, and a SSD -- will meet your requirements.

As someone else has already mentioned, pretty much all AMD Ryzen motherboards won't support IPMI (although, you can, in theory, get an add-on card to supplement that), so if your system has a problem, then it's physical console administration only -- no remote console administration.

But really, for what you're planning to do with it, pretty much anything from like Ryzen 7 on up - you'll be fine.

Pick whatever fits your budget.
