Windows defender.

Seriously, Windows 10's built-in antivirus is probably all you'll even need. Paired with Ublock Origin which will alert you to sketchy sites, you'll be 100% fine.

All anti-virus software is trash. Signature-based detection only detects viruses that are roughly one year old or even older, according to a paper by Symantec employees.

Block JavaScript by default and stop clicking on random shit.

If you absolutely refuse to trust yourself, use Windows Defender.

like misspelling google or something and being led to scam site.

In which common sense helps. Or using any latest browser as those warn you when site is missing certificates.

That said, BitDefender.

I have been using Panda Anti-Virus.  It is a cloud based solution and even on an 9 year old Windows 10 laptop, I rarely notice it is running.

Your mileage may vary but I believe some protection is better than nothing.

Not installing "security" software is some protection.

avast! isn't trash. It's still a very good antivirus and if you had data sharing unchecked in settings, you weren't even affected. Or am I the only one who goes through data sharing settings first thing after installing every program?

If you really have to go with the hating bandwagon, then Kaspersky Cloud Free. In which you also have to pay special attention not to enable same BS marketing data sharing, but do make sure KSN remains enabled coz you want that for maximum protection.
