Ryzen on 4 pins connector?

Nanley

Hello everyone. So I'm setting up new PC and i have a problem... MB has 8 pin CPU power connector, my PSU Pure Power 430W has 4pin. Will it work, or do i have to buy new PSU? It's hard to find any information about that. Many people say it will work, because the extra 4pin is just additional power, but this Ryzen is 95W and 4pin give it more than enough power especially if not OC. Others say it may cause destability or even blue screens. They say if PSU doesn't have 8 pin that means it's old crap and need replace, but this one is not crap. It was very solid at the time.

PSU technology changes. Something that was great back in the day, may not be good today.

4 pin EPS by design does 155W. 95W TDP doesn't necessarily mean it will use 95W of power at the most.

You didn't mention the exact CPU, but let's say it's a Ryzen 5 3600X (the lowest end current Ryzen at 95W). According to Guru3D's review, a Ryzen 3600X under a multicore load will make it so the entire PC will use 155W (so that's including all devices including videocard, which are most idling):

https://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/amd_ryzen_5_3600x_review,7.html

With the 155W from the 4 pin EPS you would be cutting it somewhat close, but it will likely work until you are really pushing the system.

This is the Be Quiet Pure Power 430W, yes? Because as far as I can see, it does have 4+4.

But anyways, not having enough power to the CPU can indeed lead to instability and blue screens or just system shut-offs. I always recommend getting a PSU fit for the PC you're building and not cheaping out on  vital part of the PC.

While you don't indicate the psu age the newest 430W Pure Power model was introduced about seven years ago and has been discontinued.

Given the critical role a psu plays in system stability and longevity I would look for savings elsewhere and invest in a good, more modern psu.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

You're right, not gonna push it. Couldn't find any article or youtube video about someone testing 4 pin cable in 8 pin connector. All i find is people using 4 pin to 8 pin adapter cable. Is there any reason to do it? The power remains the same, and you can just connect 4 pin anyway...

No it doesn't. This is the one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/quiet-BN105-Pure-Power-Supply/dp/B00EO48ITS

So now please tell me, will this one be good to get?

That's a good PSU option for your build

Thank, you for clearing this out for me. When i was googling this topic, i found someone who claims that his PSU does have 2x4 pin connector, but it's literally 2 of the same 4 pin connectors. He plug one, but couldn't plug the second one. Is that even possible? He used force to plug it in...

He may have had his cable upside down, but EPS has a pretty distinct pinout.

Sometimes you see power supplies that don't have the second 4 pin exactly like this, but rather with more 'non-square' holes, but that doesn't interfere with anything
