Modern (2014 or newer) HMC (Half Mini Card) WLAN cards?

kingmustard

My 2014 laptop has a HMC slot containing a 2.4 GHz-only WLAN card.

I want to upgrade the card to one capable of 5.0 GHz.

I know the Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 (released 2013) is available in this format (model 7260HMW).

However, whilst that WLAN card supports 5 GHz, it's quite old and supports Bluetooth 4.0 only.

Does anyone know of a more recent (2014 or newer) HMC WLAN card?

That doesn't help as they're all equally as old.

Was hoping for one that supports Bluetooth 4.1 or above.

Struggling to find it for sale in the UK. Plus, I'd be concerned about the driver support.

Still, I'll try to find it :) Bluetooth 5.0 really would be nice.

What is the need for BT5 specifically?

Nothing, specific. Just nice to have and I'm sure it'll come in useful.

  • 1 year later...

Found this thread looking for an upgrade from an Intel 7260 lmao.
There's a chance if there's clearance for it in the laptop you could use one of these adapters.

I've had success with it in a full size MPCIe slot and an Intel 9260 card in a dell latitude d630.
You'll also need these antenna adapters.

If you go the adapter route, might as well go straight up to the AX210 IMO.

Of course there's also the potential that your laptops antennas are only designed for 2.4Ghz so reception might be worse than it should be.

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz)
WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz) Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~800Mbit down, 115Mbit up)
Upgrading Laptop/Desktop CNVIo WiFi 5 cards to PCIe WiFi6e/7

I ended up going for an Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260HMW (802.11ac + Bluetooth 4.0) (released in 2013).
