Common sense + whatever free stuff (like Defender) + some script blocking stuff on your web browser does the trick for me.

In terms of free antivirus, most of them protect about the same, with some pushing the paid option more than others

Otherwise Bitdefender and Kaspersky seem to work okay for some people.

Malwarebytes serves a bit of a different role, but serves that role pretty well too.

Honestly the best is your common sense. All I have on my PC is Malware Bytes. Which is great. Though I might grab Avast or something similar. I had a free key for Panda a while ago on my old rig and it was actually great. Super Anti Virus is also great, which I’ve used in the past.

Norton is basically a virus in itself.

If you use MalwareBytes, windows defender, and some common sense you’ll be fine.

I personally am no fan of free AV software. I'd rather pay 60$ a year for a decent software, better safe than sorry. Even if you're careful, sometimes you just need a second line of defence. With that said, Windows Defender (comes with Win10) is said to be a pretty decent protection and it is free on Windows 10.

does anyone know which antivirus is the best

There is no "best" anti-virus - no software is perfect. And the best ones are constantly trading places in terms of what's the "best" at any given moment.

There are a collection of good ones though.

Windows Defender is surprisingly decent, and very lightweight - but it doesn't have the best detection ratings. Usually Defender is best paired with another layer of defense, like MalwareBytes.

Paid Antivirus, BitDefender is excellent. MalwareBytes Premium is good. Kaspersky used to be incredibly highly rated, but there was some controversy about them maybe letting the Russian Government into their source code - if you don't believe that rumour, than Kaspersky is excellent.

Don't ever let anyone tell you that common sense is enough though. It's not. Full stop. The sophistication of the risks now are simply too advanced and too high to simply bank on common sense. Sure - you might never get infected. But I might never get into a car accident, and I'm sure as hell putting my seatbelt on.

There are additional steps you can take, like script blockers, etc, too - but those aren't strictly anti-virus software.

I'd highly suggest not having no anti-virus. Even Windows Defender is a good last resort. Windows Defender + MalwareBytes is a good combo. Or BitDefender + MalwareBytes.

Keep in mind that even totally legitimate and official websites can be (and have been) compromised - so if you go on the web with no anti-virus, even visiting YouTube or LTT forums could conceivably infect you one day.

YouTube is safe right now. But literally any website can become compromised. Often through malicious ads that make it into Google AdSense, or from the site backend being hacked, etc.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, but ultimately the only safe computer is the one that's not connected to the Internet.

A VPN has a very specific set of things it does. It can be safer, for example, at a public WIFI hotspot.

But at home, a VPN will literally not protect you anymore than not using one, since if there's an issue, it means your home network is compromised, and you got bigger problems.

Honestly, I think VPN services are very much exaggerated in terms of their usefulness. Not necessarily bad to have one, but it's not magic, and will only help when doing certain specific things in specific ways.
