Brand New to PC Building

If your dead set on Intel:

But a faster build using AMD:

Ok, so maybe not brand new... I built one when I was younger (~15 years ago) but that basically means I'm new to it now. I want to build a decent gaming PC so I can get back into gaming with a better than decent rig. My current computer situation is a 2012 Macbook Pro and an 2014 All-in-One iMac. (Yes I know everything you are thinking about Mac's but you can't deny that it has a solid Operating System (especially for a developer). One thing to note about my situation, however, is that I will need a complete setup, not just the tower. I am not sure where to start looking or what even to look for now.

1. Budget & Location

My budget is roughly $3000 US

2. Aim

I want to use this rig for gaming. Mostly games like Far Cry 3, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, etc. So it will have to have some muscle.

3. Monitors

Like I was saying in the intro, I will need to purchase monitors as well. I was thinking either 2 decent sized or one really nice sized. I like the screen real-estate on my 27" iMac so maybe 2x27" monitors? 4K isn't that serious of a need but I would like to get the best balance between, say, 1440 and 120hz+.

4. Peripherals

I will need a good Keyboard and mouse. It doesn't have to be fancy or professional, as I don't plan to play any games that would require low input latency or anything. Just a keyboard and mouse that would get the job done. After all, I can upgrade these later.

Notes:

I am a fan of NVidia and Intel so I would like to stick with those recommendations. I am willing to go above $3000 in order to get better performance. I also would like to end up with something that is "future-proof" and easily upgrade-able.

Thank you for any and all recommendations.

At $3k it's easy to blow the budget on hihg-end hardware, but you might as as well go i9 and RTX 2080 Ti, the rest comes to preference. Probably makes more sense to just spend a little extra to get good peripherals now if you can afford it. Also go 34" ultrawide over 2 monitors, makes more sense and looks better in my opinion. I just swapped my 2x 26" 1440p displays in favor for a single 34" ultrawide.

Monitors aren't included on mine. I know nothing about gaming monitors.

So you're probably wonder why I put a 3700x in such a nice build... the reason? You don't need more. There's no reason to cling to Intel and no reason to spend extra on a 12 or 16 core AMD. If you want to future proof, buy AMD. If you want to game, don't buy cores you won't be using. This rig gets you 32gb of RAM (If you aren't doing dev related stuff here you can drop to 16gb, but for the price that 32gb is pretty damn good), and 2tb total of SSD storage. I selected the MSI X570 Carbon but you can drop down to the X470 if you'd like, there's very little difference but the X570 is ~$70 more. If money is no matter buy the X570. The case I selected is mostly just a placeholder, buy whatever case you'd like, my opinion doesn't much matter here.

I also selected Corsair peripherals. I've had great success with Corsair products and their support is top notch. I would suggest watching reviews on these products (especially the mouse) to determine if they'd work for you, as this is another area where your personal preference outranks mine.

do you have any preference to format size? do you want a portable gaming PC or big desktop?

with that budget i am sure you can get something decent, for monitor i recommend a good quality 27" 1440p monitor, as you just want it for gaming then a TN would be ok, like the Asus Rog Swift 27"

a 2080ti is a good 3rd of the budget, maybe a 2080 super or 2070 super is better so you can spend money on other components.

i can also make a list if you like for a M-ATX gaming rig.

any preference on colours / manufactures?

Thank you all for the suggestions. I have been looking into AMD a little bit and my mind is not fully made up yet. (I won't be purchasing everything until next month). I don't really have any solid preferences on color or manufacturers. It doesn't really have to look cool (RGB, etc), I just want it to perform well without degradation to graphics quality. Also, I will most likely not be doing dev work on this machine. Software development is easier on *nix systems like macOS or Linux, so I will continue to use the two macs I have for that purpose. This is strictly for gaming and I'm trying to put as much as I can up front so I can hit the ground running.

Thank you for your suggestions. I am looking into AMD more right now, I just don't know if I want to be an early adopter when I already know what I am getting with Intel. However, you are correct in that I can get more out of the computer with an AMD architecture. I am marking yours as the "Answer" since I am using your lists as the foundation to my build. Thank you again! You have no idea how much this helps!

Ryzen has been out for years now, you definitely aren't an early adopter.

As for the greater performance of the two, AMD has inferior gaming performance now but the projected performance uplift of 4th gen will likely put it in the lead (AMD has made a 17% IPC improvement promise and they fulfilled the 15% promise of last gen) while Intel will remain on 14nm with no updates aside from core count, so buying an AMD processor right now and upgrading to a 4th gen in a few months is the best option

As for this being a gaming PC, the 3900X is good and all but a more economical choice is an overclocked 3700X, as it will deliver the same gaming experience overall as the 3900X

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B
