Cat5e And Some Cat6 Cable Deals On Amazon

nick name

I snagged a couple 2 for 1 deals on Amazon today and thought the deals seemed solid and felt I should share.  There are some pretty long runs (100+ feet) for pretty darn cheap.  For example:  Cat5e 164' at $4.39 for two runs.  They have some other cables as well (USB, etc.) that are also 2 for 1.

I think the forum has a sub-forum for Tech Deals. I always see @wkdpaul throwing things in there.

Ahhh, thanks I didn't know that.

Edit:

Man, it's kind of a long scroll to get down to the Deals.  I can't say I ever visit that far south.

Not a big deal. It'll probably be more noticed in there though so I brought it up.

Personally I've been indulging myself in cheap fiberoptics. :P

Cheap fiber?  Do tell.

A store called www.fs.com they sell cheap transceivers & fiber optics. I can get a 30m (98ft.) OM4 LC UPC to LC UPC fiber optic patch cable rated for 10G/40G/100G for $35. Now I believe the reason it's so cheap is because the fiber itself is made of some glass/ceramic composite. I don't believe it's the same process as the real glass and different gases infused fiber cable that make up the Internet. With that in mind I don't expect to get 100Gbit over very long distances. There's probably small imperfections in the cable that would make it not work well.

I use them at 10Gbit with SFP+ transceivers for a 10Gbit network at home. I'd love to look into QSFP+ (40Gbit) to see if it works on a single 40Gbit link principal or if it's just Quad 10Gbit as the Acronym implies.

There's almost no point in playing with 100Gbit. Faster than quad channel RAM. I'd need an EPYC CPU and 8 channel memory to hope to saturate that.

What transfer speeds are you seeing with your setup?

I've been having a lot of troubles in that regard but while it was working at it's best I was seeing speeds as high as 1.123GB/s. I even went as far as to aggregate two 10Gbit links together and saw sustained transfers around 1.31GB/s with peaks as high as 1.67GB/s. :D

Desktop is (IIRC) a Samsung 860 Pro NVMe SSD (may have to correct that) and the server is a mixture of 16 Intel DC S4500 & D3 S4510 960GB drives.

Did you get those Intel drives new or used?  I was eyeing one recently.

New but they've been purchased as I need them not all at once. If you want something really fast that's dense and cheap look into the Intel P4500 series on eBay. 1TB of enterprise NVMe storage for ~$100. U.2 form factor.

Yeah, that's what I've been doing.  The u.2 PCIe card is only like $35 on Amazon so I'm very tempted.

There are not overly expensive LSI HBA cards available that work with NVMe drives. If you wanna stripe a bunch together :D

If only I had the cash.  Remember I am the guy who was shopping for cheap Cat6 cable.

That might be fun.

On a side note.  I went back and bought another $6 in Cat5e.  I'm up to about 500 feet and a grand total of $11.50.

Cheaper than a 1000ft. spool of bulk Cat5e riser cable. Let me know what the cable feels like in your hands when it arrives. I've touched Cat5e that was so cheaply built that the wires inside the plastic sleeve were freely moving around. It was disturbing.

Will do.  I walked around the house and didn't realize how many Cat5 cables I was still using.  It's fine for what they'redoing, but it will be nice to replace them and re-position some devices.

I did not. Money is a little tight right now. I don't want temptation to get in the way of the important things that I need to prioritize. It's a nice deal though.

I feel ya.  I bought more than I needed, but it only cost me about two beers at the bar.  I tend to measure things in beers at the bar.

I like to buy beer at the store and take it to a buddies house to drink. Cheaper. The bars in my area have stupid prices. Easily double or more what I'd pay for a bottle at any store that sells alcohol.

He was on, saw him post a Status Update. He's cool IMO so I'll chuck it up to he's busy or the notification got lost in a swarm of other notifications.
