Whole home web filtering/parental control?

mspencerl87

Guys i feel like Linus did a review of a device this year. A device that did whole home web filtering/parental control.

Can anyone throw out the name of the device or a link to the product?

Thanks, i can't find it on Youtube.

Thanks, but it was a device that you add to your existing network.. It's for a relative.

Depends on your budget but I've used a Firewalla for my IOT devices to track where they send data and block them but it has more functionality than that. Depending on the speed you need you could get by with the Red or Blue variant which provide 100Mbps and ~500Mbps respectively. If you want full gigabit throughput then you'll need to wait for the gold model.

I would recommend using something that is not subscription-based and open source. If you do not want to set up your own device (coveting an old computer etc...) you can buy a PFSENSE device (https://www.pfsense.org/products/). The only downside it is not plugged and play, but there are ample videos on youtube. Another alternative is piehole (https://pi-hole.net/), which is a DNS filtering device to block unwanted content. Depending on the configuration, all you would have to change is the DNS settings on the devices that needs protection or set pi-hole as the DNS on the router. lists for pi-hole can be found at (https://filterlists.com/). https://filterlists.com/ can also be used in many commercial firewalls or content filtering software and devices. I have used these lists on other devices and found them to be very effective. I have used pfsense SG-1100 (I upgraded later) with pi-hole on my home network for security. In the long run, I believe this could save you money by not have to pay for a subscription service.

I am former cyber transport technician and do not get any money or anything form mentioning  these products.

I have been down this route, with 2 teenagers at home, tried every freaking router, Netgear, Linksys, Synology, ASUS... and in the end settled on ASUS. It has by far the best Parental Controls, you can set times and web filters and key words for the black list and all. But, any HTTPS sites (Which are most of the freaking porn sites) cannot be blocked. I have tried everything ( With all the brands) but there is no way to block https traffic. So, I am interested in what you are trying to accomplish. If you do get the https to be blocked, I would like to know how. These 2 fuckers I have, are ingenious, they found sites like rabb.it and that creates a tunnel for them to do anything, and I have had to install key loggers on their PC's to monitor their activities as well... SMH...

Pi-hole should take care of this in that case also . If they are using tunneling, securing your router and implementing DNS redirect functions along with such things as port blocking and other blocking methods should be used. Some routers allow the blocking of VPN and proxy services. Pi-hole can  do this also with the correct list and if all DNS traffic of the device is forced to it. A firewall can also do the same thing, and traffic that looks like a VPN etc... will be blocked.  you can test the list below with most adblockers (an example). DD-WRT is good to flash your router to gain more control over your network (https://dd-wrt.com/). DD-WRT has a ton more stuff over standard routers firmware. please follow the directions on the website and do not disconnected the device during the process etc.. if you choose this option or buy one pre-flashed (you can brick your router if you do it incorrectly).

Does not support windows. My experience and expertise with Linux is close to nil.

So probably not for me...
